i came down with strep throat a few days ago. went to the docs office to have a cortazone (sp?) shot in my butt (to make the puss and swelling of my tonsils go down) and then got some antibiotics and other meds for fever and aching.

i quit smoking/drinking for a few days and really i can't remember feeling as good. puss is still coming out of the tonsils, but with the meds i feel like a normal person... no coughing, no medicine head, no nothing. soooo...

... i have gone to a bar already and ordered only a sprite (i figure i could stop at least one vice). easy. but... cigarettes... i just went to the store about 15 minutes ago to get a pack when i still have strep throat. wtf? sooner or later i'm gonna end up like that dude on the smoking commercial with that mechanism up to his throat saying "is it worth it?" . that would be kinda cool, but it sucks to know that something has a hold on you like this.

i found myself telling myself that since i had gone a few days w/o'em that i could go longer, but i found myself looking for cigarette butts to smoke around my apartment (i know... i'm lame) thinking that it was better than going out and buying a full pack.

they say that you can only quit when you're ready, but i am ready and i can't seem let the little f'ers go.

    how did you quit?

goodnight... i have to work tomorrow.

Picked a birthday about 2 years in advance, and told myself that I would enjoy without guilt until the morning after my birthday party. (this was when they were fun) That morning, I quit cold turkey. After a couple of weeks, the only time I missed them was when i was having that first cup of coffee in the morning, drinking in a bar, and after a good meal. Eventually, it got to where I not only didn't miss them, but couldn't handle being around people smoking them, especially in enclosed spaces.

I don't know anyone else who ever did it that way, but it worked for me.

I'll probably never quit, but I can think of three serious smokers I know personally who have quit. Two quit cold turkey and one used a program...Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking I think is the name. You could try something drastic like hypnotism or acupuncture if you have to. Good luck!

I quit cold turkey two weeks ago....no setbacks at all. I have noticed that I am eating a lot more now, snacking all day. I have been a smoker for 6 years...I had to go to MD Anderson two weeks ago, and swore I would never smoke again after I left! After dinner when I have cravings I drink a few beers....it works!

    I started smoking weed.

Then I couldn't afford to support both habits because I was young and poor, so I quit smoking cigarettes.

Hey if you are going to smoke, at least get something out of it.

of course this was 18 years ago. damn i feel old.

    Good luck OS

My dad quit when he had a hear attack back in 1987. Hasn't smoked since. Sad that it took that to do it, but...

Think the reason you eat more is because smoking causes loss of appetite. Probably normal for people who quit to eat more than usual.

that's one of the benefits that i'd actually enjoy about quitting if it did. hope to put on a few and maybe start working out a bit. it just seems like cold turkey is so friggin hard.

acupuncture...? not sure it's on my med plan at work, but i guess it's worth looking into. too paranoid as it is to try weed. scared of spending a night in jail and sounding like ... THIS! (turn down your volume if your at work!)

sorry to hear that dod. my dad used to be into the heavy drugs and alcohol in the past. went through all types of counseling and aa meetings. he was able to give up everything... except smoking. we smoke the same brand.

My Dad worked at Phillip Morris for 12 years and smoked 3-4 packs a day for many years. My Mom was told she needed to quit and was prescribed the patch. It was too strong and so she gave them to my Dad. That was about 15 years ago. He did chew gum like a maniac.

Different things work for different people. Don't beat yourself up finding a way. If you do, you will join the headcase club that I'm in.

    Good luck.

Scarily, this is how I quit smoking cigarettes in college, and it worked.
And quitting weed took zero effort.

Weed is easy. Alcohol is the toughest, but then I haven't quit smoking yet.

I guess I'm lucky that my habit hasn't progressed beyond one pack a day for the years and years that I've smoked.

I did the deal with myself too - decided that once I hit a certain age, not far from now, I'm done smoking.

I quit 14 days ago... I used the patch for the first couple of days. The constant stream of nicotine in my system really helped the withdrawal symptoms. After about 3 days on the patch, I switched over to the Commit Lozenges. (I've tried to quit many times before, so I already have these products at my house.) The lozenges are cool, because you take them only when you have a craving. I'd only use about 2 a day. I've been off the nicotine replacement products for about 6 days now. Working out at the gym has also helped get over the withdrawal symptoms. I also started drinking Green Tea at work to aid the detoxification process.

It’s still a one day at a time thing, but I am confident that this will be the last time that I quit.

I only smoke when I drink, which is probably about 8-12 cigarettes a week. I know I'm not addicted physically because I can easily go 4 or 5 days without having one, but I've smoked socially for a while now. I need to quit that crap, it just sounds so good after a few drinks.

I used to be a 1+ pack per day smoker. One night, I went out and smoked nearly 3 packs. Not sure how I found the time. I woke up the next morning feeling like total crap, but not like I was hungover. I just quit right then and there for about 6 months. Ever since, I've been able to have just one when I feel like it. I'll buy a pack and have it for a few weeks, only smoking one after a good meal, with a drink, or after...

It was never the nicotine for me. I chew a lot of straws, sunflower seeds, or gum.

I just quit cold turkey after about 5 years when I decided I wanted to.

And not to sound harsh, but if you can't do that it is kind of pathetic. Mind over matter. You're making it sound funny that you have strep throat but are still smoking. It's not lame in a funny way. It's lame in a pathetic way. You're injuring yourself and others. Just stop.

I'm having my first cup of coffee this morning. Time for the first cigarette. :)

Have you ever floated down the river? Imagine every cigarette you smoke will take as much effort as smoking one while floating. That should work.

Why do you all smoke? What is it about those things that make you put them up to your mouth and turn them on, and bringing carcinogens and dirt and smoke with such stuff into your body? How can you keep doing this and not feel guilty? :(

First I tried Copenhagen for about 2 months. I figured it would be easier to get off Copenhagen than cigarettes because I didn't really like Copenhagen as much as I liked Camels. After a couple months, I got tired of Copenhagen and went back to camels. Then I tried smoking weed every time I wanted a cigarette, which was often. That was a fun month, but not very productive. After about 10 years, I was at a bar one night and decided that was going to be the last night I smoked. I quit the next day. After about 2 or 3 weeks the cravings were totally gone and now I can't stand cigarette smoke.

Most people I know that quit, just went cold turkey. But, I know at least one person that used the patch to quit.
