I've been so impressed by Hayes' rebounding that I ran the numbers from NBA.com. He's not listed as one of the leaders on the site (I guess he doesn't have enough games to qualify), but when you calculate his 7.6 rebounds per game over 21.2 minutes through 10 games, it comes out to 17.2 rebounds per 48 minutes.

That beats the league leaders for rebounding per 48 minutes on the site, which are Dwight Howard at 16.6 RP48, Ben Wallace at 16.3 RP48 and Tim Duncan at 15.8 RP48. Pretty impressive numbers for a rookie that just walked on the team a few weeks ago!

Give him 30-35 minutes and he will get you 12 boards. Somebody's gotta teach this guy how to shoot a jump shot over the summer so he can get some more minutes backing up the 3 spot.

Thats what I don't get if a player dosnt have a shot but can hustle and Rebound why not develop the mid range jumper.

I'm talking 1000 mid range jumpers a day in practice. and double that amount during times where he misses. Thats old school baby and we need to force that. If he developed that mid rang jumper he would be starting.

He does have a mid range jumper, and can even extend it a bit, but he is not being asked to shoot that shot.

He is doing exactly what he is told to do, and doing it well !

I'd really like to see what would happen if Van Gundy give Hayes 30 minutes in a game. It would be interesting to see how many boards he would grab but it would be more interesting to see how the team played. With his limited playing so far, he's right at the top of the +/- stats.........and a lot of time he's not on the floor with both the big 2 since he is coming in for Yao usually.

In the limited minutes we've seen him, it's been a disaster for the opponents when they tried to post him up with a bigger player.

I just wished Jeff would experiment with the rotation a little bit and start him, and give him 30 minutes or as many minutes as he can get before fouling out. Then bring in Howard with the Stro and the second unit.

Howard has the worst +/- numbers on this team. His minutes should be cut in favor of Chuckie.

a mid range jumper would be nice.. but I love Chuckies put backs and excellent hands with the basketball. I don't think I have seen him fumble a pass yet.. unlike mostly everyone else we have thrown too with bullet passes in the paint. If only Stro had Chuckies basketball IQ.

He would get more minutes, but he gets in foul trouble....besides, u cant give all the minutes to him and bench juwon and swift, they will get stale then and we'll need everyone come playoff time......if we get there :(

Yeah he would get around 17 boards if he played 48 minutes.

But didn't we say Swift woulda been a 18-10 guy if he played 48 minutes as well? Fatigue comes into play so you cant directly relate the stats he pulls in to the PT he's got.

...But at this point I'd love to see Hayes play 30+ and bring in more boards for us than Swift has all season. Friggin softy....

If your PF(Swift in this case) averages 10 rebounds per 48 minutes, that's pathetic. I can't see any reason why Hayes shouldnt' have all of Swift's minutes.

Hayes grabs 21.1 percent of all available rebounds. Very impressive. That leads the NBA.

Actually Chuck Hayes is 4th in rebounding per 48 min for all players at 17.4 reb. There is an option to select all player not only the qualified. Jamal Sampson leads the league in rebounding per 46 min at 26.9 rebounds. but he average only 3 minutes.
Marcus camby is second and Loren Wood is third.

Nonetheless, I have been very impressed with Chuck.

JVG's slow pace obscures that somewhat. That's why I look to rebounding rate, and though he doesn't have enough minutes to qualify, Hayes' rate of grabbing 21.1% of the available rebounds is best in the league.

I can't recall a rookie ever leading the league in that, much less a minor league pickup.

Where did you find that stat. It's such a small sample size, so I don't expect Hayes to keep it up, but that stat is still worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the season.

Here's the def. of the stat:

    RbR
Rebound rate (available since the 1971 season in NBA); the formula is (TRB * (Tm MP / 5)) / (MP * (Tm TRB + Opp TRB)), multiplied by 100. Rebound rate is an estimate of the percentage of missed shots a player rebounded while he was on the floor.

The big question for me is this....Is Chuck Hayes just auditioning for another team next season? Rockets have no advantage in signing him next year and if he keeps up his current play he will be in demand.

I remember when the Mav's signed Gary Trent several years back and he averaged double digit rebounding but the Mavs were unable to resign him the next year because Minny signed him for more than the Mavs could offer.

Chuck Hayes looks to me to be a real steal right now but it's ashame that someone so young that could be a rotation player on this team for years might not even be on the team after this year for salery reasons.
