Just throwing a wild theory out there. Seeing Chuck defend durant better than anyone on this team, and the team not afraid to switch him on PnRs, why not try Chuck at the 3 more often. Offensively he can't do anything at all, so it doesn't really matter if he's playing the 3 or the 4, I'd like to see if he can become a bruce bowen type, if his lateral movement is good enough, he can body up the stronger 3s that shane can't take, for example, tonight, he could've taken Wally, while shane took Durant. Also if he's not playing the 4 it allows either Landry or Scola to be on the floor with Yao, and we still have two great defenders on the floor. We should try the following lineup. Yao Scola/Landry Chuck Battier Mcgrady With this lineup, you basically PnR Yao and Tmac all day, and teams cannot defend a Yao Tmac PnR like they can a alston Yao Pnr, where they just sag off ALston to double Yao.
Just throwing this out there. Kevin Durant ain't your typical 3. He's a skinnier faster slightly shorter more guardsy version of Kevin Garnett, and guess who we use to defend that guy with a lot too. Yep, Mr. Wagon himself.
^^ good point Actually Chuck played the three sporadically in college up until his junior year when there was no player to take the inside. But he could shoot a jump shot and a free throw then, so I would say take that information with a grain of salt.
lmao he cant even hit from 1 feet what do you think he's going to do when teams leave hm open on the perimeter
The thing is, he could guard half the threes in this league, Carmelo, Dirk, Odom, Sjax, etc... I trust Shane on the more finesse perimeter players, but if you need someone to put a body on the stronger perimeter player, chuck is out best option.
Having him guard the 3 doesn't make him a 3. I like the idea, but I don't get the whole converting Chuck-wagon to a full "3". Just play Scola and Yao, get Scola to pop out, Chuck stays in his comfort range (0 feet from the net). Thing is...this would only work for like one or two teams in the league XD. I don't think Scola is quite at the "I can stop a decent PF from scoring over me" level.
Because when Chuck Hayes plays PF: 1) He gets rebounds 2) He takes on fouls for Yao. That is why JVG and RA have him play that position. Chuck can't shoot from the outside, that's why he can't play the 3. The lineup you proposed above is really bad because it doesn't have enough jump shooters, and isn't balanced.
Yup, that's exactly what I said. It's funny how fans think they know more than 2 successful professional NBA coaches. That's why we're fans and that's why they are NBA coaches. On a more serious note, most of you fans out there should sit down and think for a moment why not just one NBA coach, but two seperate NBA coaches can come to the same conclusion about the starting lineup.
I see no problem playings Hayes at the 3 if the lineup looks like this. Yao Scola Hayes McGrady Whoever ---- Cant have Battier out there with Hayes though.
Haha .. NO. Chuck can't handle and he can't shoot. You rob him of whatever advantages he has (quickness) by moving him to SF, and magnify his weaknesses.
He can't shoot no matter where you play him, he can handle the ball great as long as you are not asking him to dribble penetrate. His advantages are his incredible timing on his active hands defence, he probably leads the team on clean swipes at the ball. He would be a great defender as long as he can laterally keep up with his man, and i think his lateral quickness is as good as 80% of the 3s in the league.
I like Chuck a lot, but you are vastly overestimating his defensive abilities. He does a fine job for a PF on switches, but you wouldn't want him guarding the elite 2s and 3s of this league full time like Battier does. And the spacing provided by Battier (and to a lesser degree Bonzi) at the SF is crucial to the offense.
I'd say scola providers just as much spacing as bonzi and better shot selection too. The reason I like to see chuck experimented at the 3 is to see if he can become a factor on offensive boards without battling a 4. and also if he can punish and therefore wear down his man because he is more physical than battier. obviously it will only be for limited period in a game against certain teams but i think in the long term chuck can be a great 3 assuming his lateral quickness is good enough. If he can work on a jump shot, i'd rather see him take an open 18 footer rather than shoot layups over people who are taller than him and can jump higher than he can. He did have a jumpshot in college so he needs to work really hard on it in the offseason. Remember bruce bowen was almost as bad as chuck on offense, he just worked really hard at it.
That would be hilarious if Chuck Wagon became a 3-point specialist like Bowen. I take it back, that would be frickin' awesome!
I agree. Chuck can be used only in short bursts to bang the 2s and 3s. If you want to bang them all night long, there is only one choice:
