I wanted to pose the question since I was a little too young to remember Daly's coaching but I was fortunate enough to remember Rudy's entire tenure. Both have very similar resume's (back to back championships, gold medals, tenure in the sport) and both were very well liked coaches. So who was better? Discuss.

Kind of hard to quantify who was a "better" coach

They both were both great coaches. Each won 2 championship's. Daly coached the Dream Team to a gold medal, Rudy took a bunch of scrubs and got a bronze.

I can't really figure out how to quantify who was "better"

Both player's coaches. Both stressed defense.

For the Rockets, Rudy was the perfect coach at the perfect time.

For the Pistons, Daly was the perfect coach at the perfect time.

That said, I'd take Rudy in a heartbeat because of the way approached the game.

It may be uncouth to talk ill of the recently deceased, but I've never liked what the "Bad Boys" brought to basketball. That Daly would sanction the stuff Laimbeer and Mahorn did tarnishes whatever legacy he may have in my mind. That team, as good as it was, took some of the beauty out of the game for me... they pushed the envelope as much as possible and disrespected the spirit of the game. I think they won dirty.

he's talking about the team rudy took to the world championships, they were just college kids and cba'ers and they still got a bronze.

    sorry dude.

Rudy T was a great motivator, his players loved him. Barkley, Steve Francis, Dream etc loved playing for him. There was a family atmosphere for the Rockets when he was here. the fans, players, we felt like Rudy was part of the family.

Chuck Daly managed big personalities just as well as Phil Jackson.
the Detroit Bad Boys were a great team.

    I don't know who's 'better'.

I believe there is no such thing as the "best" coach. Different coaches do well with different kinds of team.

Both of these guys were great coaches. I can't say which one I would choose because he was "better." But if I did have a choice to pick one for my team, I would definitely pick Rudy T. He is just an extremely likable guy. It is so easy to root for him.

hard call. as much as i appreciate rudy, my gut feeling is that chuck daly was the better coach. 8 seasons in college and 14 in the pros, he definately had more experience.
