Chrysler cutting back one quarter of dealerships, with GM apparently doing something similar soon. Should be some good deals out there this summer... might have to look at a Jeep Wrangler if the price is right.

    Six in Houston

Six Houston-area Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep dealerships are among the 789 nationally that learned that Chrysler LLC wants to close them.

They are Archer Chrysler Jeep West, Archer Chrysler Plymouth Jeep, Archer Dodge, Archer Northwest -- which is also known as Jim Archer Chrysler Jeep -- Rogers Dodge of Alvin and Baytown Chrysler Jeep Dodge.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Arthur Gonzalez has to approve the cuts before they go into effect.

Seems a bit harsh to notify a business today and have them be gone by June 9th.

I think Honda already announced they're increasing production on some of their models. They already cut back for the downturn. There were/are tons of great deals out there on Acuras (too bad they made the new TL look freakish). The only thing GM that I may want is a CTS, but I just hit 117k on my car, so I still have another 10-15k to go before I hopefully need to consider buying a new one.... hopefully longer as this car has been trouble-free.

Who the hell would want to buy an American car nowadays. There's a reason why these car companies are going out .... They suck.

We were in Marketing class the other day and was ask which one of us drives an American car ..... 4 out of 58 students raised their hands... prof reply "now we see why"

I don't want to take this to the D and D forum, but I'd like to say the "suck" part has a lot more to do with marketing, perception, and too-many dealers (a huge problem even when times were good). The quality has improved a lot over the last 20 years...not saying they're the best, but there are good American cars out there and a general "they suck" is an unfair generalization.

In the family business, we've had all sorts of cars and trucks, and I'll say that the Dodge Sprinter is one of the best big vans out there. I'm hoping we can get a few on the cheap now.

Well, we have dozens of vehicles in our fleet including good American vans and trucks...but we're not talking about the same type of vehicle.

And if you take really good care of your car, you can even make a Kio Rio last.

It's Kia and their sales are on the rise. So I don't think belittling Kia is going to make you look smart in the future. I actually prefer to buy a Kia these days than any American brand. Hopefully, there won't be any more "American" brand autos in the future, it's a shame really...

I'm also very, very interested in buying a Wrangler this summer. We should all monitor this thread and post updates as we find good deals around town. On another note - has anyone been Select Jeeps in League City. Looks like they mod used Wranglers and sell'em at an ok price. I'm just debating whether or not to buy a modified used Wrangler or a brand new one (if the deal is right and they bring back 0% APR).

Kia's quality has gone up since merging with Hyundai. Their cars were about the least reliable vehicles made. They're still not exactly great, but they've improved thanks to Hyundai.

BTW, there were rumors Chrysler was trying to sell Jeep to another manufacturer, but I don't know if they're still valid. I had heard a Chinese company was in the running - now that would be comical beyond belief.

    1) It was a typo.
    2) I'm not belittling their cars, so let me be specific. One of my best buds owns an '01 or '02 Kia Rio and took that sucker from Cali to Virginia. The only reason he said he was willing to do that was because he's a mechanic. Those cars have horrible transmissions but he said that you can do a long trip if you prepare right, like changing out the timing belt etc. So that's what I meant. You treat a vehicle properly and it will lasts....did not mean to belittle current Kia's.
    3) What's with the anti - "American" brand? Are you saying it shouldn't matter? I mean, doesn't Toyota share assembly plants with Ford and some of their different cars have the same engine?

Original point is that the quality of GM and Chrysler and Ford vehicles were bad, but not so bad today, and their biggest failures have been in their areas like marketing. And also I was saying that if we take really good care of our vehicles, they'd last a lot longer.

I drive a Toyota Corolla btw. And we have Dodge, Mitsubishi, Chevy, and a bunch of other vehicles in the fleet. The biggest problems occur when the drivers don't report small issues in time, which leads to big issues, and when they beat the crap out of the vehicles with their bad driving.

from what people that know what they are talking about you are right. i think american cars have gotten better in the last 10 years or so. but largely overall i still dont like the way they look. especially the interior, the instrument panel, steering wheel stuff like that just looks low quality to me. maybe there improving that as well. i hope so

Do me a favor and don't hand down a car. It'll be leaked out and the kid will expect it.

A child's first car should be a glorious moment. Make them earn it now. Give them the carrot to achieve it.

Will this make prices higher for car buyers because it eliminates competition?

    Now, GM...

GM has nothing I like. The Saabs were cool in the 1980's but not so much anymore.
