Trade exception is not off-limits for Rockets
Talks with 76ers prove front office could push into luxury tax under right circumstances

When the Allen Iverson trade talks were bouncing around the country, Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson made sure his voice was heard. He was not, however, after Iverson.

Such a deal would not have worked for the Rockets, who have nearly $30 million tied up with Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady this season.

Dawson was offering his $4.2 million trade exception in the event the 76ers, determined to free themselves from long contract commitments, needed a place to move a salary.

They didn't, and if they had, the Rockets surely would have been cautious.

The 76ers did not need the help of a trade exception (with which the Rockets may trade a pick for a player without making the money match up to $4.2 million) or a team with cap space, instead swinging the deal with Joe Smith's $6.8 million expiring contract, rather than have to take and then move a longer contract.

But when Dawson made sure Sixers GM Billy King considered the Rockets' trade exception, he showed there could be circumstances in which the Rockets could push into the luxury tax, even before the team lost Yao for at least six weeks Saturday night.

Again, those would have to be special circumstances. Playing without Yao and McGrady qualifies.

To the Rockets, the luxury tax is usually a hard salary cap. But as the season pushes through January and toward the Feb. 12 expiration of the exception, the Rockets could look for their usual midseason help (David Wesley and Jon Barry in 2003-04, Mike James in 2004-05). About now, they need it.

For now, many of the names out there — Corey Maggette ($7 million), Earl Watson ($5.4 million) — make more money than the Rockets' exception. Brevin Knight, who is often mentioned but whom the Bobcats insist is not available, earns $4.4 million.

The Rockets likely will wait and see when and if McGrady comes back, how Bonzi Wells works out and if young point guards John Lucas III and Vassilis Spanoulis contribute.

Waiting has served them well. That's how they had the money left when Wells needed a place to land.

Last week's inactivity might indicate a move could be made later.

    Chucky Atkins
    Sarunas Jasikevicius

Just some names to consider. Can anybody think of any other possiblities?

So will that be a package deal? If so, who will be in our outgoing list?

No, you can't package the TE with a player.

The most pressing issue right now, with Yao out, is a quality starting centre. Mutombo is a nice backup, but he definitely can't be counted on to play 30/35 starting minutes. His will aside, his body just can't handle it, not at this advanced age.

Of the lot, Delonte West looks good. This year is an aberration for him, most likely because of playing time, a muddled role, and an uncertain future, but the guy is a definitely a prospect. He can shoot, he can make plays, although he's not exactly a traditional point guard. But a guard rotation of West, Alston and Head would be VERY good indeed. That's not to mention we still have Lucas and Spanoulis developing.

100% sure. You cannot add a player's salary to our 4.2 TE. You can, however, add a draft pick with it. (I believe)

that is true. We can not package TE with players to trade for a bigger contract.

Most of those players listed are point guards. I think we already have too many PGs. They're aren't the best, but we still got some. The only way I would want to use the TE on a PG, is if we move one of ours also. I like both JL3 and V-Span and I rather have them log minutes than to trade for one and give that player minutes. No problems with trading Rafer though. :D

Out of that whole list, ZaZa Pachulia sounds very tempting especially with Yao out for 6 weeks.

    You can't use a TE with a player for another player...you can't add $4.3m to a player making $2m for a player making $6.3m.

You can use a TE independently as part of a larger deal. The Rockets had a TE from the McGrady-Francis/Mobley trade. They traded Reece Gaines for Zendon Hamilton and the TE from the ORL trade (and future 2nd round picks) for Mike James. Each part of that trade worked independently capwise.

PACHULIA is a player who could help the rockets very much. I like his effort and determination- good signs of a winner!

Pachulia is the Hawks starting C, plays the 3rd most minutes for them after Joe Johnson and Josh Smith and gets 13 ppg and nearly 8 boards. Other than someone being a Rockets' fan, is there a reason the Hawks should part with him?

    1. steven hunter: the sixers want to move him for an ending contract. the rockets can offer better, the TE. the chron has reported that CD and king have been in talks about the rockets offering their TE in order to help with the AI trade. i think they can resume talks about our TE, this time for hunter.

hunters stats per (roughly) 30 minutes (which he will play here): 8ppg, 3bpg, 6rpg. one of the best shot blockers, per minute, in the game.

    2. brian cook: i'm not sure the lakers would be interested in sending him here, but this guy can really put up points and rebound.

    cook's stats (roughly) per 30 minutes: 12ppg, 7rpg, 1blk, 1stl

there is also melvin ely, but after looking up his stats, he's a scrub and not that young either. i'd rather play juwon & deke at center and hayes, padgett, & novak at PF.

Maybe we could use our TE for someone like; Banks or Zaza Pachulia. And then follow that move up by trading Juwon Howard ( I am a HUGE Howard fan by the way) and Bob Sura for Troy Murphy.

If we make move like this one or similar to it we might be able to keep our head above water until the dynamic duo return.
