Chronic: Texans coaches deserve much blame; Carr being Carr

This is why I said the Atlanta game was not a "trap" game. That's really too stupid to revisit, so I won't.

Here's the deal. The Texans are a decent team. Decent teams in the NFL can win anywhere from six to 10 games. Take the high end with the Texans because they were far from decent last year and managed six wins.

Here are a few of the Texans' problems thus far, and why they are 2-2 instead of 3-1 of 4-0. (By the way, if you recall The King cautioned you when you went down the schedule game-by-game, that you might put the Texans at 5-1 through six games, but you should adjust it to 4-2 because they're not that good. So no need to panic. They'll beat Miami and Jacksonville.)

Kubiak has shown that he is capable of being an excellent coach - he motivates, doesn't accept excuses, holds the players' respect and typically puts his players in position to make plays. But it seems he needs better communication or a strong voice in his ear (odd, since we know Mike Sherman is there) when play-calling in the fourth quarter. Two straight games the Texans have had ridiculously long or erratic fourth-quarter drives when they needed to score twice. Those types of mistakes prevent come-from-behind wins, something a decent team needs to put together a nice record.

Kubiak also started the game against the Falcons with a somewhat arrogant plan, scripting runs on the first three plays as if he expected the Falcons to sit back and allow the Texans to establish ground game dominance immediately. That was a bad script for a team that doesn't yet have a great running game and was without its top running back in Ahman Green.

Psychologically, if you run right through a team early, you get the upper hand. But what if you get stuffed? Then you come back later and aren't able to pick up 3rd-and-1s because the defense knows it can shut you down. Work on your team's mentality at practice. Do what it takes to win the game during the game.

That apparent arrogance leaked into the defensive game plan as well. Yeah, I know, Joey Harrington was the quarterback on the other side, but it's not like he's David Carr. Harrington was coming off a big game the week before and licking his chops at DeMarcus Faggins. Yet, the Texans seemed reluctant to blitz, a standard strategy against Harrington, who has shown over the years that he freezes up like a zombie when pressured. Harrington was sacked 14 times in the first three games. The Texans got to him twice (Amobi Okoye and DeMeco Ryans), though he did have a couple of nice getaways.

You can't let a QB complete nearly 80 percent of his passes, even if his name is Brady. With Faggins making physical mistakes and C.C. Brown adding mental errors on a regular basis, it is imperative that the Texans put pressure on the quarterback. By any means necessary. Aren't you tired of hearing about how defensive coordinator Richard Smith loves to attack and not seeing it on Sundays?

Yes, the Texans have significant injury problems - this is the NFL ... that happens. But simply put, they didn't play very well Sunday. They looked like a team that expected victory, as opposed to a team that was determined to earn a win. And that includes the coaching staff.

Who do you put the onus on for this one, the players, the coaches or the football gods?

It's a miracle that Matt Schaub was sacked only once. The guy is an escape artist. That said, Ephraim Salaam should never be put on an island with the likes of John Abraham. Salaam was being abused all day, and the Texans finally paid for it with a crucial strip-sack in the fourth quarter. The Falcons didn't score off the turnover, but took valuable time off the clock trying to do so before a blocked field goal try. (What a wonderful surprise it would be if Charles Spencer recovers.)

    Two suggestions:

    1. The Texans' coaching staff should show Mario Williams tape of Abraham.
    2. Texans fans should start ragging on Mario again. It's about time for him to get upset at being dissed and have another good game. That's the routine. Or would y'all rather wait two weeks and have him shine against Tennessee in VY's House? It's probably one or the other. Tough call.

Your former favorite quarterback had an interesting day, though the game wasn't worth watching past the third quarter when I finally gave up.

David Carr got the start for the Carolina Panthers and it took less than a quarter before he and the Panthers' offense was being booed. "It was ugly," said Carr, who completed one pass of 15 yards or more - a 24-yard screen pass for a touchdown with 23 seconds left.

Observer columnist Tom Sorensen wrote this on Carr: "He might as well have been back in Houston. Some quarterbacks attract hangers-on. Carr attracts tacklers."

It was late in the third quarter when Steve Smith hopped onto the telephone that Carr had been talking into all day and lit into whoever was on the other end - presumably the offensive coordinator, but it might have been Carr's dad - demanding that Carr throw the ball downfield. At that point, Carr had thrown for 40 yards.

Smith had only two catches for 5 yards in the game's first 53 minutes, and finished with five receptions for 32 yards. This is what Andre Johnson felt so often, but chose not to complain publicly about.

What a great place to get a double-coachspeak from.

Bucs Cornerback Ronde Barber was asked by the Charlotte Observer what the Tampa Bay did to stop Smith.

He said: "We didn't do anything to him. He just wasn't getting his opportunities. They weren't giving him opportunities. I don't know the reasons for that. We had some things in (the defensive scheme) to deal with Steve Smith today and to our benefit, we didn't have to use them."

He meant: "Thank God David Carr was their quarterback."

Smith elected not to speak to the media.

    He said: "..."

    He meant: "#%$*(@"

Carr did have one of the plays of the day, a spectacular 15-yard scramble in which he went airborne and flipped over two tacklers to get a first down (see photo above).

i swear, the Gatorade is spiked in the 4th quarter.

"hey guys, we're down two scores. not too worry though, good things come to those to wait. let's kill the clock to the very last second of each play."

How does he know this about AJ? Is he just shooting off at the mouth like a typical mediot, or is he sharing something he encountered inside the lockerroom?

Some might, but I wouldn't. I was just curious is all. But I see where you're coming from. It just doesn't seem very responsible to me to write those things dogmatically without either specifically qualifying it as one's opinion or having solid knowledge of it. And, if he knew Andre felt that way but it was supposed to be off the record, he should leave it off the record.

Ephraim Salaam blows big purple donkey dongs.

Easily the worst starting OL we've got.

Well, when Charles Spencer gets healthy in 2-3 weeks, Salaam will have a nice seat on the bench. Spencer will make sure no one will get past him.

Didn't he have a serious leg injury? I don't think he will have the mobility to block the faster ends.

Yes he did. It's still fairly unlikely that we'll see Spencer this year.

Not many people in the NFL can stop John Abraham. The dude is a monster. Salaam made some mistakes, but he's still the best we've got. Trust me, there isn't a one of us who should want the alternative (Jordan Black).

This line just cracked me up:

"He might as well have been back in Houston. Some quarterbacks attract hangers-on. Carr attracts tacklers."

Regarding the first bolded topic: I thought we blitzed more than we have all season. We didn't blitz at all against Manning for fear of him burning us. Well, we blitzed against Harrington and he found the holes and burned us.

I would guess it's probably more inference from all the things AJ has said since - both some veiled shots at Carr and all the praise for Schaub.

Salaam has had to go against Freeney and Abraham in back to back weeks. He made some mistakes but they are considered elite DE's for a reason. We'll have trouble with quicker DE's even if Spencer comes back (which I doubt he will from what I've heard).

The OL is actually one of my least worries for once. We need to get healthy first and foremost, improve the running game, and really take a look at possible replacements for Faggins.

David Carr is a crunch player. He always scores in the final minutes.

On the arrogant game plan I was gonna criticize what the writer said but his view on it does make some sense on 2nd thought...But still, just because you get stopped on the first drive doesnt automatically mean you cant get those "3rd & 1's" anymore after that. Actually if you're getting 3rd & 1's your actually doing what you NEED TO. Its the 3rd & 6's you don't want. And there isnt a rule that says of your first 3 plays you have to attempt at least 1 pass. I missed the 1st few plays but if they did that for mentality and mindset then yeah, kinda weak.

I do think coaching messed them up this game a little. 4th quarter comeback offense was decently efficient in moving the ball, but the clock management was bad. And WHY when you're down 2 scores (10 pts) with under 3 minutes to go, do you KEEP trying to get a TD (that you DONT have to have right THEN) and kill more clock? You need TIME not the biggest score you can get. They were lucky to get the ball back off a blocked field goal with just a 10 pt deficit in the first place - take the field goal points (that they ended up missing anyways  ) and get another stop that you NEED to get anyways, with time on the clock. To me THAT was arrogant - that was almost saying we're gonna get a TD, the ball back, and another TD for the WIN not a tie.

I'm not gonna soften the load on Mario with excuses. He should get pressure to perform at all times, its part of being former #1 pick. But you can't shine on the DL every week. Even the best might have 1.5 tackles a game over 4 weeks with no other stat to show for them. If his effort was lacking definitely rag him. But if he was helping out what was a solid unit against the run, maybe should give him a dose of credit for overall team D improvement. Now its time for him to perform up to Amobi level :)

I actually think Salaam has done an admirable job so far this year as the LT. Especially considering his age and that much wasn't expected of him. I worry that people are overestimating what Charles Spencer will do when he comes back for this team. He learned and developed quickly last year, but he had only been on the field for two games when he was injured. We really don't have a good idea yet how capable he will be when he gets back out there...IF he gets back out there. I just hope that Salaam can maintain his current play through the year and into next in the case that Spencer doesn't come back this season, and requires a little bit of adjustment time for next season.

i have no idea who this cockstick is (he calls himself the king? jesus alou...), but this is far and away the stupidest thing i've read in, like, days. i thought mario got decent push against the colts and one of okoye's sacks, either that day or this past week against atlanta (games are starting to run together) was a direct result of mario flushing the QB from the pocket into okoye's waiting arms.

anyone disappointed by mario williams so far this year is, wadr (though not much), a moron and should kill themselves by death. or stop watching football. he's been a frickin' disruptive little beast each and every week. even against mr. rocket arm.

It's funny how a lot of people talk about Mario Williams having his sacks presented as gifts, but they never mention how he creates them for his teammates, as well.
