Springer suspended for 4 games; Garner for one

Astros pitcher Russ Springer was suspended four games and fined an undisclosed amount today by Major League Baseball for throwing multiple pitches at Giants slugger Barry Bonds during Tuesday's game.
Springer's suspension will begin tonight, unless he plans to appeal the decision made by baseball vice president of on-field operations Bob Watson.

Astros manager Phil Garner was also suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for "the intentional actions of Springer after warnings had been issued to him early during the Bonds' at-bat."

Garner is scheduled to serve his suspension Monday when the Astros play at Washington.

Springer was issued a warning by plate umpire Joe West after throwing a pitch behind Bonds on Tuesday. Springer threw three more pitches inside, including one that hit the end of Bonds' bat, before striking him in the shoulder.

Maybe Springer just wanted to spend more time with his wife after her surgery.

Bonds was not playing well at the time and we still didn't pitch to him. That's not good baseball. I was glad to hear about this suspension. Hopefully we will learn a lesson from the way we played.

Go Stros!! Get em' all back with a sweep!

We didn't pitch to him?! Maybe he didn't get a hr but he certainly got some hits off of us and knocked in some runs.

And four games seems steep...if it was anybody but Bonds in the box the repercussions probably wouldn't have been so severe.

yeah but pitchers always get a little more since they wouldn't play everyday anyways (this is really equivalent to 2 games for a everyday position player)

Are you kidding? I think Springer should be out for more.

He threw a pitch behind him...next pitch right at him, but it hits the bottom of the bat, so it was counted as a foul ball, even though the pitch was aimed at his body...next pitch was up near the shoulders and hit him, 92 mph fast ball.

Springer got a warning after that first pitch...and continued to fire away. Bonds or no Bonds, Russ is an idiot and deserves the penalty.

Pedro Martinez has hit the same batter 4 times in a row and hasn't been suspended yet for it. Why should Springer?

Springer deserves a big fat medal, and a bronze statue outside of MMP. I cheer anytime somebody takes that arrogant tool down a notch or two.

Springer was completely classless and players like him give the otherwise respectable Astros organization a bad name.

The guy is a piece of crap compared to Bonds, it's not like it's Clemens and Piazza or Clemens and Bonds going at it, it's freakin' Springer. May be he's pissed off that no one is talking about him and he wants to be mentioned on SportsCenter again.

I absolutely despise Barry Bonds and have no respect for him, but what Springer did was stupid, plain and simple, don't care if he has an Astros uni on or not.

So it's ok if Springer is good to hit batters intentionally?

You're for NBA superstar calls too obviously.

No, I am for playing a 'clean' game and not take cheap shots at opposing players just because you can and you know you're irrelevant.

lol now i didn't see the sequence of pitches from springer

but i can tell you right now, it sounds ****ing hilarious

i'll have to watch it sometime, but 5 pitches in an attempt to hit bonds, that's just funny as hell.

course then again i'm all for throwing car batteries at bonds... so .... maybe there's a correlation.

If Springer hit anybody else on that team, he would have gotten thrown out, fined and MAYBE get one game. And it'd be done with... but guess what it's been half a week and we're still talking about this. Why? This isn't the first time someone's gotten hit, intentional or not. And don't give me he's no Pedro or Clemens or any other superstar crap. If it's no big deal for them, then it shouldn't be for Springer. Either it's all ok or it's not. And frankly, this is a part of the game.

I agree. I just don't see the reason for a fuss, except that it was Bonds. If anything, it makes me care less.

Springer was given a warning...then threw 2 more times at Bonds...with the last inching up towards the head...completely embarrassing. Some of you hate Bonds, so you let your hatred cloud your judgement.

Bottomline is that it was a b**** move.
