In the hours before the free agent marketplace would open, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey took care of some business at home.

Morey confirmed Wednesday that the Rockets extended qualifying offers to forward Luis Scola and guard Kyle Lowry, keeping their rights to match any offers they receive when they become free agents tonight.

The offers are not made as proposals for their next contract; only to make them restricted free agents. Morey has said that Rockets owner Leslie Alexander has directed him to match any offers Lowry or Scola receive.

Either could be part of a sign-and-trade deal the Rockets might pursue, but only if that is their choice.

Rockets forward Jared Jeffries chose not to become a free agent, letting the team know in writing shortly after the season that he would not opt out of the $6.9 million remaining on his contract, his agent Andy Miller said.

The Rockets had an early-termination option on Chuck Hayes’ contract, but did not exercise that option, with Hayes due $2.3 million next season in the final year of his contract.

Jefferies is more valuable to use without opting out. Now, he can be a filler in SNT.

Dude I know the feeling, I have a black and red Ariza jersey that Brooks signed (I know random). Hope I can still use it in 10-11.

Overpaid isn't a good excuse for not retaining Scola now.

he cant. you cant sign and trade a player and package him ...toronto isnt dumb enough to give scola 17 million a year. scola is staying a rocket i would bet my daughter on it.

But you can S&T Scola (or Lowry) in exchange for a Toronto bad contract (Turkoglu, Calderon) as part of the Bosh deal.

I wouldn't do it, but you can.

You can but you have to have the signee's OK. ie. Scola or Lowry would have to agree to go there before you could SnT.

If we get Bosh, I don't care what happens with Scola but if we don't get Bosh then Scola is really important for us to keep.
