Adelman hints at using Drexler as template for role

AUSTIN — To Tracy McGrady, the first Rockets practice was "pretty sloppy." It was "rocky." It was "rough." And he loved it.

But it was not simply the return to the floor that cheered him. McGrady got his first taste of the offense that will use him differently, letting him pass from more areas on the floor and catch more passes on the move. As ragged as it might have been, a few hours of running the offense was enough to get an idea of what could be.

"There's a lot more movement in this offense," McGrady said. "I can play off the ball — something I did not do in the past few years — having guys make plays for me. It seemed like I was the guy making the plays. I wasn't on the receiving end. This time, it seems like I can be on the receiving end.

"I'm definitely going to cherish those moments when I can have a guy making a play for me."

From the day Rockets coach Rick Adelman was hired, he said he wanted to find ways to make scoring easier for McGrady, twice the NBA scoring champion.

Adelman also has expressed the idea that McGrady could play better but score less, citing Clyde Drexler (whom Adelman coached with the Portland Trail Blazers) in the 1989-90 season. Drexler's scoring average dropped by almost four points that season, but to Adelman, he was just as valuable.

"You get a lot more credit for doing less on a winning team," Adelman said. "That guy (Drexler) is the guy I always tell people about. One year he averaged almost 27 points per game and six assists and seven rebounds. The next year, he averages less, we win 50 (games) and get to the Finals. He did less stat-wise, but he was still the guy we went to and leaned on.

"Everybody is going to have their moments, but it's about what the team does in how they're going to be judged."

McGrady, who averaged 24.6 points and a career-high 6.5 assists per game last season, said he would be just fine with scoring less if it means winning more, an attitude he said will have to be shared on a team with an influx of veteran talent.

"There are guys who have to sacrifice their games, because we do have a lot of talent," McGrady said. "Everybody can't come out here and be the man. We have a couple guys who have been the man on previous teams, but on this team, everybody has to sacrifice something, even myself.

"With all the scoring talent, a lot of the burden as far as scoring doesn't have to go on my shoulders that much, so I can sacrifice giving up extra shots to some of these guys that are on the team that are just as talented as I am."

Even if McGrady does shoot less, Adelman said his 6-foot-8 star might be doing more or at least be used in a variety of ways.

"I'm hoping it's not going to be that much of an adjustment," Adelman said. "We can put him in different spots on the court where he is going to have the ball in his hands, but he's going to have more opportunity to find people because there's a lot of movement and he's a great passer.

"I think Tracy is such a natural, willing passer, he's going to be able to do a lot more than just score."

Adelman sounded even less concerned with the rocky first-day execution, saying it was to be expected. McGrady seemed more pleased to be back than displeased with the details.

"Guys were just running all over the place like a chicken with his head cut off," McGrady said. "It was rough today. That's expected coming into the first day of training camp, new system. So guys are out of place. Guys are playing extremely hard. But your timing and rhythm is off. So it was a rough day.

"Pretty sloppy, just breaking the ice, getting everybody together. But it's a great day."

    CAMP ADELMAN: DAY 1

It took only one day of camp for the change in practice styles from Jeff Van Gundy to Rick Adelman to become obvious.

Actually, it did not take that long, with the schedule of a 3½-hour practice gaining attention before the team hit the floor. But once the Rockets did get to work in their first practice under Adelman, they talked about the change to a more scrimmage-oriented workout, with fewer drills and more running.

``I think it's good we come in here and get up and down the court,'' guard Tracy McGrady said. ``That also gets us in game shape. I don't care how much working out you do in the offseason, if you come in here and get on the basketball court and you stand around and you talk and review things, until you get on the basketball court, you're really not going to get in game shape.

``I think it's good that we play that way. It also helps with our timing. I think it's a good thing.''

After watchin' the interviev with T-Mac looks like he is in a scorin' mode. He knows what Adelman wants from him he knows what he can do and he knows we really have a great roster this year and it can/should be our year.

I'm excited too cause Tracy will do his job. There are a lot op players who can make game easy for Yao and Mcgrady, we have playmakers. The offense is different. We will have more easy for baskets, especially T-Mac I think.

Adelman has a great potential on this team, he has two dominatin' superstars, scorin' machines plus a couple of smart guys who can make plays for them and for the other teammates. And the best think Adelman knows what to do with that potential and any injuries won't change it.

I'm sick of T-mac talking. I think he should just stop talking till he makes the second round.

I'm excited about this season and his role. But T-Mac has run out of excuses and yet he still acts like "Yeah, now THIS is something that should've been done long ago."

He's played in different systems, different teams, different coaches, balanced teams, superstar-oriented teams... Everything.

I really can't stand it anymore when T-Mac even HINTS that external factors have exclusively created his failures. He hasn't had the best of luck, but he hasn't had the worst of luck. It is what it is. Even if he's not to be blamed for the number of first round exits in his career, as a superstar, he should be willing to shoulder that blame at least once.

He blamed himself after the game 7 debacle. he didnt blame yao's lack of conditioning or rafers inabelity to hit a layup. he blamed himself for being exhausted and tierd. despite 29-13 game.

Last year was the best team he had been on and he took on some of the blame for that 1st round defeat. However this years team is much better because of the depth of the bench. Some of the players that don't make the cut will be in the rotation of another NBA team this season. So as 1 of the 2 stars on this team, you don't Tracey to voice his excitement about this years possibilities. I can't wait for your rant when Yao arrives & gets interviewed.

yea, but i hope yao can regain going out into the high post. hopefully he won't turn the ball over so much early that it'll force adelman to change how he uses yao.

hopefully adelman can really bring out the versatility in yao.

what u want him to do? don't talk and get fined?

dude, the reporters are asking him the questions. and those answers are pretty cliche answers that have been floating around for a while.

I didnt see tracy shrugging off any blame in that article. he just stated a fact that the whole NBA community knew. he was being driven into the ground by gundy's stale offense and our lack of depth. he had to be the playmaker, scorer and the leader all at the sametime. no wonder he's back is screwed up.

He's excited now because he can just go back to being part of the offense and not be " The whole offense".

i don't think ppl gave him credit for that. he took on ALL the pressure. then he blamed himself for not getting us past the jazz.

basically tmac and JVG were the only ones who got blamed for the playoff failure. the rest got a pass from the public.

just hope adelman does not do what all old tmac coaches used to do: fall in love w/ his greatness and just take him for granted and force him to do everything.

    doc rivers to JVG.

There is yao should be blamed. the poor guy was coming off a broken knee injury. it's phoenominal that he still putup 25 points after that injury. i'm blaming a stale offense which was so obvious that even okur said after the series that they knew our every play and move well before hand we even started it.

Lack of depth didnt help either.

Exactly. He's just glad, because of Adelman. Now he can do what he likes. He doesn't have to concern about whole offensive game. Every player will have his task.

i'm saying from the american media and public's perspective, JVG and tmac took the brunt of the blame. JVG got fired. tmac's status got knocked down even more.

If he likes it so much, maybe he can find a way to play 75 games or more this year.

Thats the real recipe for success. balance. teams with great balance and depth will more often then not win over a team with a great couple of players and no depth.

Even those great Lakers teams with kobe and shaq had handy depth.Brian Shaw, Rick Fox, Devin Gorge, Ron harper, fisher, Horace grant, Ac Green , elden Campbell, Mitch Richmond....

Consisdering he played 71 last year while carrying the whole load, i'm pretty confident he can...infact the only year that he missed a substantial amount of games was the 05-06 season. other then that, he has been a regular.
