What a joke if this is true. Justice must know the right people. He's one of the reasons I stopped getting the Chronicle. Writers like him are why sports sections of local newspapers are almost completely irrelevant.

The funny thing about reporters is they are always covering other people's accomplishments.

It is why I never went into Sports casting after graduating with a degree in it....I wanted to be a doer - not a reporter of others deeds.

Since John Lopez no longer works for the Chronicle, I guess they had to give it to somebody.

All I can say is, Richard Justice must be an extremely charismatic guy.

Wow... it's the first time the Chronicle has had a winner in the sportswriter category since 1987, and only the second time in the history of the award (50 years).

These days, there are lots reporters who seem to think they are more important than the athletes and teams they cover. Most of them work at ESPN but there are several local ones here in town as well. These are the guys that give the whole industry a bad name.

It has been that way for YEARS.....just watch the movie...The Natural....reporters have had inflated egos forever....the only difference is that back in those times, they were closer to being right than they are now.

Yeah, because Stephen A. Smith is just worlds better...

Richard is a very good writer and I can personally attest that the athletes in Houston clubhouses genuinely like and respect him, unlike certain colleagues of his who I don't need to name. What a lot of people, especially online, don't understand is the difference between a column and a blog.

Newspaper blogs serve two functions -- to inform and to entertain. For Richard's actual job description, which is column writing, it's kind of no-man's land. You can't write a "condensed" column and stick it in a blog update like you can with a news story -- doesn't work that way. Columns are inherently far more centered around the narrative. So, he entertains with sarcastic rants, and most of the Chron.com readers aren't bright enough to figure it out and instead, they take it seriously. It's not serious. He has a blog because he has to -- it's company policy -- but it's not at all important to what he is actually there to do.

If you don't like his newspaper columns, that's one thing. But I get the feeling a lot of online folks don't like him because of how trollish his blog is, and not everyone seems to realize that it's a joke. It's supposed to be stupid.

With that said, even in his columns, does he waffle? Sure. But when he's good and on his game, in terms of column writing, he's really good. One of my favorites to read in the business, honestly. And I think a lot of you would be very, very surprised at how much credibility he has within the players.

He sucks. And Berman won something? Handing out awards to local TV news reporters seems sad to me. Ya I know y'all love Berman but meh... Someone mentioned McClain up there somewhere, he blows too. He talks about the same damn things every time.
