The littlest Rocket is having a big-time experience with the USA Select Team in Las Vegas.

Aaron Brooks has driven by Jason Kidd. He's penetrated on Kobe Bryant. He's gotten nose-to-nose with LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.

"It's been an eye-opener for him, but I think it's something that's going to pay big dividends for him," said Rockets head trainer Keith Jones, who works with USA Basketball and has seen every workout. "Imagine a rookie going into his first training camp in October and he's already had a solid week of experience and work going against Kidd and Kobe and the rest of them. It's on-the-job training that most players don't get."

Jones said that Brooks, at first, was a bit tentative and has sometimes struggled in getting his shot to fall. But what has opened the eyes of many in the USA Basketball camp is Brooks' raw speed and his ability to get into the lane and get his shot off against virtually every defender.

"The kid gets to the hole, no doubt about it," Jones said. "And you can see him gaining confidence as each day goes by. It's a good group of younger players that he's with. The other day, they went through three scrimmages games against the big boys and they won the third one. The kids are not backing down at all."

In addition to his on-court experience, Brooks has been pulled aside for individual talks by Kidd and Bryant.

"Jason told him to have confidence, to turn the corner and go in to the basket with a purpose," Jones said. "He told Aaron that he's got the speed and the skills to succeed in the league. Now, it's all about having a plan, knowing in your head what you want to do and then doing it.

"Kobe talked to him about getting off his shot. He talked about how it was important as a point guard to know his teammates and get them the ball where they feel comfortable. And he also told him that there were times when he's got to know when to take the shot himself. You can't back down. You've got to know what you can do.

"Kobe and Jason both told him that he has a real future in the league and that one of the keys is just to always go out and play with confidence.

"Do you know what this can mean to a kid just coming into the league? Usually they get a little experience in summer league, then they have individual workouts and then they have this big period of adjustment in camp in October.

"It's always an eye-opener for rookies — the difference in size and speed and skill level of NBA veterans. It's something they have to adjust. Now you've got Aaron, who not only has seen veteran NBA players. But he's seen the best of the best of NBA players. He's gone against Jason and Kobe and LeBron.

"The kid came here not knowing what to expect and he's held his own very well and, I'd say, made an impression on some people."

And some clowns are wondering why we want to get rid of Rafer to get Brooks on the floor. These aren't summer league scraps he's taking to the rack. Obviously he has impressed the likes of JKidd and Kobe if they are pulling him aside to talk to him.

Very comforting. I am guilty along with the rest of us at saying "WTF" when they drafted him instead of a PF. A JLIII with skills! Between his speed and penetration, the rest of our team will get more one on one plays against the defense.

Aaron Brooks will be the best late Rocket draft pick since Sam Cassell.

Well Morey may prove to be smarter than most of us. I will admit that I questioned drafting a small guard. I think Brooks may end up being one of the best steals in this years draft. If other GMs saw what Morey saw no way he would have lasted until the 2nd round.

Wow. That's great. Honestly, I didn't even think about how beneficial scrimmaging against THOSE players could be for Brooks. I'm so excited. I wish the season would start already.

 Good news to see that he's getting this experience, like a head start. Too bad there may not be much PT for him this year :( I have a feeling he will be a fan favorite very soon when he gets PT

Man, I got to say, the more i hear bout this kid the more excited i am to see him play for us. Yea i was def blown away when we drafted him. But he continues to get rave reviews from almost everywhere he goes. Great to see. If he can get his confidence goin and plays well, the sky's the limit with this team. We COULD be unstoppable with the team we have: inside scoring, mid range, 3pt, defense, passing. This is the most real hope Ive had in years. Good job so far morey.

Don't under estimate the part that Adelman played in drafting this kid. It was he who was watching all Brooks games this past college season and envisioning him as his future point guard, not knowing what team he might be coaching. Not to take credit from Morey on the overall job he has done up to this point, just saying Adelman had a big part in scouting him.
