Oh NO! It will be no fun for Ming to miss the night he officially introduce the new Ming Dynasty to the Queens. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/rox/1695719 Dec. 9, 2002, 11:55PM Rockets summary Yao questionable Other than Yao Ming, who is questionable for tonight's game with flu-like symptoms, Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich will have every active player at his disposal. As Tomjanovich happily reported after Monday's practice, the Rockets are a little banged up, but nothing serious. And nothing like the Kings, who will be without starters Mike Bibby, Peja Stojakovic among others. "Everybody's got aches and pains," Tomjanovich said. "I didn't see one guy walking around with a straight posture. Everybody had a little limp or an ice bag, but that's par for the course at this time of the year." Pocket picker For all the offensive firepower packed into Kings guard Doug Christie, his best asset might be his defense. Christie is averaging 2.71 steals per game -- second in the NBA to Philadelphia's Allen Iverson -- and notched a season-high eight picks Sunday against San Antonio. "The guy that's really playing well is Christie," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "He ignited them against us with his steals, and last night again he got eight." The two-time NBA All-Defensive second-teamer had four steals last week against the Rockets. Texas three-step The Rockets, Spurs and Dallas Mavericks have joined forces in making the journey to Texas a most unpleasant trip for visiting teams. The Rockets have a 7-1 record at Compaq Center, while the three are a combined 25-4 at home. "Four years ago when I came, I knew that eventually we'd be at a point where we'll be competitive and teams would really, really be looking out for us," said Rockets guard Steve Francis. "Probably a couple of years ago, Sacramento would come here and not even think that we could give them a challenge. But I think us putting pieces together as far as personnel has really made us a threat in the West." The West maybe, but the Kings still have the Rockets' number for now. Holiday cheer The Rockets kicked off their annual "Season of Giving" festivities on Monday as Glen Rice and Tito Maddox visited the Ronald McDonald House, along with the Comets' Kelley Gibson. The community initiative, formerly known as the Rockets' "Five Days of Giving," will continue with three more events in coming weeks. On Wednesday, three Rockets players will attend a performance of A Christmas Carol at the Alley Theatre. On Friday, the Rockets' Alumni senior citizen party will be held at 10 a.m. at Pecan Grove Manor. And finally, the Rockets are slated to visit the Texas Children's Hospital and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. next Tuesday. -- JANNY HU
Sure Vlade didn't offer him a cheesburger? Get Well Yao-za! Either way, probably more minutes for Mr. Cato
Is it me, or does it seem like basketball players get the flu more often than your average person? Maybe I am just imaging things, but could it be that since NBA players are in a state of exhaustion more often than the average person, they are vulnerable to sickness more often and therefore get the flu more often?
*Not good news...hopefully the big guy can give it a go... *While I agree that Christie has been playing very well of late, the guy that has been playing exceptional ball, and leading this team, has been Bobby Jackson...He has been the clutch player these guys have lacked over the last coupla years, Bibby's occassional flurries aside. * Assuming that we've got a full complement, I think that this is a team ripe for the picking, and could be a statement game for us. * Having said all that, does this belong in the game notes sticky? I'm not sure what the parameters are...
That could be true...factors accounting for it could be the constant state of physical exhaustion you mention, the fact that they fly a lot, and planes ACs are germ heaven, and the further point that, unlike us, if they are feeling just a little off, they can't really take it easier for a day or two...you're in or you're out at that level...
Did we watch the same playoffs last year?? MacBeth, if I had to pick one person in the NBA to take the last shot for me, it'd be Bibby (yes, over Kobe, Michael). That guy has no fear! Even if we beat the Kings tonight, we still haven't beaten them at their best.
Yao's Got the Flu??? Someone get some Ginseng!!! And fast!!! We need some special Asian herbs to heal our big fella. Heck, let's give the whole team some ginseng for more energy (and none of that prepackaged GNC shelf stuff, we're talking the entire ROOT!!!!)... Heck, let's give HERBS FOR EVERYBODY! even to the first 5000 attendees to the Compaq Center (well, everybody except CAT... that dude is already pure energy.) Then we can ALL BE BOBBLEHEADS for the game. Dang Flu! What a bummer! Anyways, I know Yao likes his mom's cooking. I really hope mom is whipping up a mean shark fin, beef ball, hot & sour, cracklin' rice, you-name-it, everything SOUP. And then Rox organization should order out for some some split pea, pronto! theSAGE
another thing to take into account is that they travel so much and go so many changes in weather. that can really take a toll on a person.
Divac drives hard to the hole , Yao sees him coming Jumps straight up with hands extended and then it happened Hachoooo....... Next thing you know Divac had some "stuff" all over his face and worse is yao blocked the ball as well. feeling the "stuff" on his face was sign of contact , Divac flops to the floor expecting a foul or some unsportsmanlike act.... Not getting the call he whines like a cry baby ha ha ha
locker rooms are a breeding place for germs to fester, it wouldn't surprise me that NBA athletes get the flu more often, in fact it wouldnt surprise me that most professional athletes get it more than normal people because of the locker room situation
Also, their extensive travel exposes them to more different strains of flu, giving them a better chance to contract it.
Yao Ming has the rare strain of the flu called Michaelum Jordanis Look for 38 points and possibly a game winner tonight from Yao...
Thread closed. rockets.com Dec. 10 (Updated 11:41 p.m. CT) - The Rockets will look to knock off another of the NBA's best teams tonight when the Sacramento Kings come calling to Compaq Center. (KNWS TV-51; SportsRadio 610 AM; Radio Noticias 920 AM). In its first appearance following an impressive 97-72 mauling of the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, Houston will be seeking to snap a nine-game losing skid to Sacramento. After coming down with flu-like symptoms following yesterday's practice, Yao Ming was present for today's shootaround and in good spirits. He will be in tonight's starting lineup. Rockets.com has a full preview of tonight's game, including the Inside Scoop, Who's Hot and Who's Not, tonight's Key Matchup as well as the latest Injury Report.
They would have to get about 10 different shots, since the strains are different around the country. B
