    Wells excused from practice
Rockets unsure when new guard will come back

    By JONATHAN FEIGEN
    Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Rockets guard Bonzi Wells was excused from attending Friday's practice "for personal reasons," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. Van Gundy did not describe the reasons and said he did not know when Wells would be back.

Wells' agent Bill Duffy also would not elaborate, saying, "We're going to have to leave it as 'personal.' "

Guard Luther Head also missed Friday's practice because of a death in the family. The Rockets did not know when he would return.

Wells, 30, has not played in the preseason, and has been able to practice in only four workouts because of soreness in the groin muscle he tore last season and then a series of root canal procedures this week. He did attend Wednesday's home game and was expected to be past his health issues enough to begin practicing Friday.

"I don't want to put a timetable on him or make him feel he has to rush back," Van Gundy said. "I know everybody has a first-game mentality with every player. I'm not in that mentality. He has to deal with his personal stuff first. When he gets back, we'll get him ready to go then."

Even before he spoke with Van Gundy about needing to take time off, he was not considered close to playing, and Van Gundy said Wells would not be ready to play "for a while."

"He has to be able to get on the practice floor for a considerable amount of time to get himself in shape enough even," Van Gundy said this week. "Right now, it's been a wasted (18) days, other than picking up some learning parts of it because his time has been so intermittent. It's been unfortunate for him, unfortunate for us."

    Sura not giving up
Guard Bob Sura has not given up on his hopes for a comeback from micro fracture surgery, Van Gundy said.

"Bob continues to be diligent in his rehab," Van Gundy said. "He just keeps plugging away."

Van Gundy said he could not predict whether Sura would make it back or when he and the team would make a decision, though they would like to have an idea by the end of the month when rosters are trimmed to 15.

"I think that (a decision) is probably coming," Van Gundy said. "That decision has to come, probably more sooner than later for both parties.

"We have to know, because we have roster spots that are important. And he has to know for peace of mind for him. Man, it stinks when it happens for anybody, but particularly when someone has put so much into it."

    Alston needs cut man
It's been a rough preseason for Rafer Alston, who had to leave Friday's practice after colliding with Kirk Snyder and opening a gash above his right eye that needed 13 stitches.

In Austin, he caught an elbow while defending Juwan Howard and needed four stitches over his left eye.

i love Van Gundy's attitude. You don't want to rush Well back too soon and have him really hurt himself.

Why hasn't BOBBY COME OUT AND SAY A GOD DAMN WORD? Why do we always have to wait and wait and wait for BOBBY? Come on Bobby you are a grown man come out and say something. If you retire then retire, if you want to stay just come out and Say it and we will support you. Dont leave us pondering what you are going to do. It sucks. Totally

Im not liking the way things have started with Wells here.

it pisses me off too because everything else is falling into place so neatly...who knows maybe we'll regret signing Bonzi.

i know pretty much everyone liked the signing even if they werent fans of Gawan, due to the fact it came at a low ball contract.

but, if he's gonna toy with being in and out of the line up , and in and out of practices...the fuel could spark the fire that royally screws the Rockets season.

i hope all it is, is a personal matter, and that he'll be on the court and healthy come opening night...

no matter what Wells and the Rockets say about his groin injury, it IS a major concern.

Its worse for Bonzi, if he doesn't have a GREAT SEASON with the Rockets he forget about getting anything more than what he is making now next season.

He needs a breakout season both as a player and as a person to make the big $$ in the offseason.

the groin injury is carried on from last season. if he does miss the beginning of the season. the last thing he wants is publicity as damaged goods in a contract year.

For the time being (until we hear he's come back to the team), we may as well leave Bonzi out of our discussions and depth charts.

Wells is probably looking at how well Synder, Head, & V-span are playing, and he may be thinking he won't get a free ride from JVG and may have wasted a year by signing here.

    And, he may be right.

On Sura, I think the Rockets know he is done, and are hoping he himself says he is done, as they are going to be forced to make a decision and it won't be pleasant if the team has to put the boot in his butt to kick him out the door.

What worries me is that you haven't heared anyone from the Rockets say that Bonzi "will" be back.

If anything sinister was happening relating to bonzi's attitude was happening gundy would have said it. remember DA. gundy is a straight shooter. i think bonzi is have some family problems. it's nothing that will make him or the rockets part company. talkbout overraction!

I don't like all the secrecy surronding this, these guys are sports celebraties and the public/fans have a right to know whats going on. No explanation of why he is out, no timetable as to when he is coming back isn't acceptable to me. Hell, I would rather have the Rox PR department lie and say he pulled a hammy or something rather than this.

I don't think the Rockets need Bonzi...they have enough talent already.....and I am not sure he even fits into the team and style they are bulding.

Agree completely, but Bonzi is so talented he could obviously make us better. I like what Snyder is doing right now but we have a very long season ahead of us.

no we do not have a right to know. why do you want to know about a player dealing with some private issues? why do you want to know, what does it matter, I don't get it. So Bonzi is dealing with a private matter and not knowing what it is is torturing our shoddy little minds. Good. Now it's our problem.
