Van Gundy says he would have played 19-year-old Gay
Although not opposed to using teen, Rockets coach likes trade for Battier

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was prohibited by NBA rules to talk about the Rockets' draft-night trade for Shane Battier, but he said Thursday he agreed with it.

Van Gundy, however, was even more emphatic he would have been happy to add and play a rookie, insisting that even one as young as 19-year-old Rudy Gay could have earned his way onto the court.

"I have played rookies," Van Gundy said. "I have played young veterans. I have played old veterans. The only thing that matters to me is putting the best team on the floor.

"I am fine with playing anyone of any age. We play to win and we play the best players. I never think about how old they are; I think about how good they are."

That, however, might offer an indication of how much he agreed with the trade, in that Shane Battier's age (27) and experience (five seasons) were not reasons to make the deal. Though he indicated that he does not have authority over draft decisions, Van Gundy clearly agreed with Wednesday's.

"I was absolutely in favor of our draft strategy," Van Gundy said.

"I agreed with the draft-night decisions of Carroll (Dawson), Daryl (Morey) and Dennis (Lindsey)."

I see a lot of potential for this thread.

JVG merely agreed with the trade. He didn't have authority over it. Hmmmm

strategy is right but the result could be better... can we say trade the pick for proven players like ... Mo Peterson or Peja? or at least Battier + a future pick?

Massive damage control right now... no way does JVG feel the need to clarify this if he wasn't taking a hit.

    I hear you Clutch.
I'm dying to hear who's willing to say that this is what they orchestrated/wanted. My bet is that no one takes full accountability because the risk/reward is way too high which just shows how bad the trade is.

At this point nobody wants to take responsibility of the mess they created.
Earlier I hear an interview with CD and he said this was a group decision and emphasized that JVG was very VOCAL on the decision.

Yes. Very transparent. And the Chronicle is just a tool for the Rockets apparently.

Well, if he's the Toronto Vince Carter then we got a steal. If he's the New Jersey Vince Carter, I would agree with you.

    First of all

Ryan Bowen dispells his "i play the best players' lie

Second, why then did CD say he ran it through JVG before they made the trade, if JVG had nothing to do with it.

This guy is pathetic. I was willing to give him another year and the benefit of the doubt, but as well spoken as he is, he lies alot.

Talk about spin your way. Gundy is like a politician now. Yeah, I like to play rookie, but also want to put the best team on the court. That's just bs argument. Then why do we bing in rookie at all?

There is a reason that coachs are not usually general managers at the same time. There is a conflict of interest. What is the average tenure of an NBA coach? 3 year or something ridiculously short? Why would anyone who had a 2 year horizon be allowed to make 4-10 year decisions?
