Who's the best remaining option to coach the Rockets?

    Jeff Van Gundy
    Mike Dunleavy

CHICAGO -- Former New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy has emerged as the favorite to become the Rockets' next head coach after deciding late today to visit Houston, Rockets General manager Carroll Dawson said.

Dawson, in Chicago for the NBA predraft camp, said Van Gundy's trip to Houston on Thursday was not an interview, but that he had invited Van Gundy.

"He wanted to see the city and the new arena," Dawson said. "I don't think that's unusual when someone is thinking about a new job. I invited him to Houston, so obviously I'm glad he's coming, but he really did just want to see everything -- the homes, the buildings, the schools. That's what it is."

Asked if he hoped to close a deal with Van Gundy while he was in Houston, Dawson said, "I'd like to get a new coach. Let's see how everything goes."

Negotiations between the Rockets and Van Gundy have not started.

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander is not in Houston, and Dawson said Alexander has not scheduled a trip to meet with Van Gundy yet.

Van Gundy and Mike Dunleavy had emerged as the two finalists. The Rockets also had met with Paul Silas and Larry Brown. Silas on Monday was introduced as the Cleveland Cavaliers' coach, and Brown officially became the Detroit Pistons' coach.

The Rockets have been searching for a coach since Rudy Tomjanovich stepped down on May 23.

    Shocking?

Well what the hell, he can do no worse.

I hope he dumps the rest of the assistant coaches, and brings in a great offensive coach to compliment his defensive strategies.

Damn, I wish Dunleavy would take the asst job, but no way that will happen with McDavid coming.

    lol Mr. Clutch...

MR. SAGE IS JEFF VAN GUNDY! Heh..It was all Sage who posted like pages of stuff supporting Van Gundy.

    Well anyways..
It would be a great idea if they got Van Gundy plus a bunch of qualified assistants who have experience and are intelligent and creative....to help Van Gundy on offense and other stuff.

    But...frontrunner.....Brown....hmm...

Well for now......GOOD JOB TEAM VAN GUNDY!

Well.....Sage and all you New Yorkers who support Van Gundy....that question is for you!

Hmm....Van Gundy. He's not the greatest coach ever.

But it's either him or Dunleavy.

And Dunleavy......well Van Gundy is better.

    Carlisle over both!

This is an article three months ago.

Van Gundy stands by Rudy T

    By DAVID BARRON (02/27/2003)
    Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

Remember when TNT analyst Jeff Van Gundy used to coach the New York Knicks? Remember what would happen when a call went against him? Remember his patented pained, petulant, disbelieving pout?

If you think Rudy Tomjanovich is what's wrong with the Rockets, Van Gundy is looking at you in the same way this morning.

You could practically hear the disbelief oozing through the phone line from Washington, D.C., Thursday when Van Gundy was told about the growing legion of Tomjanovich naysayers.

"Have they forgotten 1994 and 1995 (the Rockets' NBA championship seasons, for those of you who have)?" he said. "I've watched the Rockets for a long time, and I know three things. They have a championship coach, which is hard to find. And they have a point guard and a center you can build around for the next decade, which is hard to find. And they have a general manager in Carroll Dawson who is astute.

"So, to me, they have everything they need to rebuild. That's what they're going through, and over the next decade they're going to reap all the good things that come through rebuilding, because they're led by Rudy T and Carroll Dawson, and they've got a great point guard and a great center."

And so, Van Gundy said, it is "foolish" to rail at Tomjanovich as the Rockets go through their growing pains in the first year with Yao Ming in the lineup.

"You can't speed up the maturation process of players. They come at their own pace," he said. "Steve Francis has developed, and Cuttino Mobley has developed, and they now have an inside presence that will be dominant. There will be bumps in the road, but look at how much the team has improved. All I see is upside."

OK, Mr. Ming, it's simple really... get ready for a little test.

Question: if you were walking on campus with a box of popcorn and suddenly greeted by Jodie Foster who says, "mmmm, that popcorn smells good," what would you do?

    A. accidently spill some popcorn on her clothes?
    B. immediately ask her out on a date?
    C. stand in stupor with your mouth agape?
    D. or reply, "yes you're right", and walk away?

If you picked "A": you are a sly little dog
If you picked "B": you have courage but no more than your average mortal man.
If you picked "C': you are a below average mortal man
If you picked "D": you are a man of incredible will power and mental toughness.

    Who is a "D"? JVG is a D. JVG = Mental toughness.
He walked away from Jodie Foster *#$*&)!!! How many NBA coaches can actually say that? Much less, say, "I've been intimately attached to Alonzo Mourning before?" Everything else being written re: JVG including the crap I've been posting is just minutia. All you need to know to reach an informed conclusion about this special man is that JVG walked away from Jodie Foster. Not even Hannibal Lecter can resist the charm of Jodie Foster. So, there you have it Ming.

JVG, Rock Solid, Mentally Tough and Femme Magnet

    next question...

    :D :D :D

Personally, I think Van Gundy choose option C and Jodie Foster just walked away in disgust.

    Mingonly,

If the Rockets get Van Gundy we'll probably be more of a half-court team, which would probably benefit Yao more than anyone else. If we get Dunleavy we'll probably run a bit more and running the break isn't exactly Yao's forte. From your name, I'm assuming you're a Yao only fan.

If you're saying that Van Gundy does not have a great basketball IQ you're insane. The guy bleeds hoops and while going to Yale won't make you a great coach, I think that most of the guys that go there have a pretty good IQ. Van Gundy probably puts more research and time into preparing than any other coach in the league. 15-16 hour days were the norm for him.

All of you people who takes it as a given that Carlisle is a better coach than Van Gundy needs to consider that Van Gundy has done just as well as Carlilse. He took the New York Knicks to the NBA finals and Carlisle took the Pistons to the eastern conference finals. I know you can say that the Knicks team was better on paper but it sure wasn't by much and the Knicks had to go through both a good Heat team and a good Pacers team. The Pistons really didn't meat any real good teams on their way to the ECF imo. Had they beaten the Nets then I would be really impressed. So if you look at results Van Gundy has just as good a track record than Carlisle hasn't he? People think to seem otherwise.

Then some posters blame Van Gundy for leaving the Knicks the way he did. I don't really know why he did that but I am not a bit worried about Van Gundys personality as I generally think he is a good guy who will work his butt off for the team that hires him. Carlisle on the other hand has proven to be very hard to get along with and has been described as immature and annoying! Again I say advantage Van Gundy.

Both Carlisle and Van Gundy are good coaches I think but many people seem to think that Carlisle clearly is the better choice but that could be because Carlisle's achievement is fresher in memory than Van Gundy's imo.
