Indeed. I think with the progress that Brown made quickly in OTA's and having Salaam around, Spencer was probably headed down this path anyway. Good luck to him. Maybe he gets healthy some day and has a chance to make it back to the NFL.
Charles Spencer had the size, athletic ability, and demeanor to be the next Willie Roaf.......it's a shame the "Dayne train" had to run over his dreams.
Man, it's crazy how this team seems to get players that they think can be the future at left tackle only to see them languish on the DL for a couple years before cutting them loose. First Boselli, now Spencer. Duane Brown better watch his back.
This move bothers me. The guy was working really hard to gather himself back to the offensive front; Yet Glenn earl, who suffers a casualty at the beginning of every year is still on the roster. Speaking of Safeties, A source close to me(sirus radio), has stated that Roy williams might not even be on the training camp's final roster on monday. Maybe he can land here. =)
There is a reason Roy Williams isn't well thought of, and it just so happens that reason is the same reason we don't need him in a Texans uniform. HE CAN'T COVER.
He was and is working very hard. Problem is, they can only carry 80 on the camp roster and they had to sign their draft picks. Someone had to go. Spencer hadn't hit the milestones they were looking for by this point so it was his turn. How long can the Texans afford to wait? Earl's injuries were more of a known quantity. Yes, ACL injuries are bad, but they know how to fix and rehab them better than ever. It's no where near a career ending injury any more.
i see your points, it's just very sad to see. He basically went from Prospect status, to franchise status, to no status
Well, what started out promising ended predictably...Wish he would have been able to come back as he had the goods to be servicable...Wish him luck...
Charles Spencer is done, even during OTA's you could tell his knee was still not right and he was still about 30 pounds overweight. Due to all the weight they have to carry lineman very rarely overcome devestating knee and leg injuries like the one Spencer received....in all reality his career is most likely over. All you have to do is look at LeCharles Bentley, the games most dominating center...signs a massive contract and after a devestating knee injury and 3 years of trying to make it back is now without a team. And on the Roy Williams front.....all Roy Williams is, is a undersized LBer trying to be a S. The fact that this guy keeps getting voted for pro bowls, easily makes him the most overrated player in the NFL.
Umm, he was picked up quick! Former Texans lineman Spencer lands with Panthers http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5904142.html Former Texans offensive lineman Charles Spencer is preparing to embark on a fresh start with the Carolina Panthers. Panthers general manager Marty Hurney picked up Spencer on waivers Wednesday afternoon – a day after he was released by the Texans. The 6-foot-4, 337 pound guard will fly to Carolina Thursday afternoon and take a physical Friday. The Panthers open camp Saturday morning and Spencer looks forward to being on the field with his new teammates. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get to where I’ve wanted to be,” Spencer said. “To get turned down (by the Texans) was really hard. But this is another opportunity to showcase what I can do.” If Spencer’s knee holds up like he expects it to, he could fit in well with the Panthers. They are looking for big offensive linemen since they plan to focus primarily on running the ball this season. They drafted Jeff Otah this season to start at right tackle and they have Jordan Gross at left tackle. Spencer will likely work at guard, a position change he had been working to make while still with the Texans. “I talked to the GM,” Spencer said. “He said he was very excited. He was surprised I was out there on the market and he’s very excited to get me in.” Spencer said he is not worried at all about the team’s physical since he recently passed one for the Texans. Spencer is looking to get back on the field for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury on Sept. 17, 2006, against the Indianapolis Colts. He made just two starts at left tackle as a rookie before landing on the injured reserve, where he spent the past 22 months rehabilitating in hopes of getting another chance to play.
