http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3640949.html Texans hire two assistant coaches Karmelowicz, Benton join staff; team awaits word from Sherman By JOHN MCCLAIN Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Texans coach Gary Kubiak has added two more assistants to his first coaching staff. Bob Karmelowicz, who coached Kansas City's defensive line for the last nine years, will have the same responsibility with the Texans. John Benton, who coached St. Louis' offensive line last season, will have the same position with the Texans. The hiring of Benton, who has only two years of NFL experience one as the offensive line coach — will not affect any decision regarding Mike Sherman, the former Green Bay head coach. Sherman has been offered a position as assistant head coach/offensive line. Kubiak still is waiting to hear from him. If Sherman accepts the position, he'll coach the line with Benton's help. Kubiak appears to be in no hurry to hear from Sherman, whose decision might come this week. Karmelowicz, an NFL assistant for 14 years who'll work under defensive coordinator Richard Smith, was hired by Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City. He was retained by subsequent Chiefs coaches Gunther Cunningham and Dick Vermeil. Karmelowicz also coached at Cincinnati (1992-93) and Washington (1994-96).
Haven't the Chiefs had the worst defensive front four in the league for a decade and the Rams second in sacks allowed ???????????????????????????????????????
Well, according to this AP report from Yahoo Sports, it looks like Benton is our OL coach.... http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-texans-coaches&prov=ap&type=lgns Texans hire three assistants February 8, 2006 HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Texans hired Johnny Holland to coach linebackers, John Benton as offensive line coach and Martin Bayless to be an assistant defensive backs coach on Wednesday. Holland was most recently with the Detroit Lions and has also coached at Seattle and Green Bay. The former linebacker spent seven seasons with the Packers after a college career at Texas A&M. Benton, a former offensive lineman at Colorado State, spent more than 10 years as a collegiate assistant before joining the St. Louis Rams staff in 2004. Bayless was the special teams assistant for the Oakland Raiders for the past two seasons. He also worked as a defensive assistant with Carolina and played 13 NFL seasons as a defensive back.
Let's see...take an assistant coaching job with the worst team in the league? Or wait and see what kind of others you can get?
