I didn't see this thread yet....please lock if it's been posted. I believe everyone expected this. The Rockets made their first roster cuts of the preseason Wednesday, releasing guards Garrett Temple and Romel Beck. Both played limited minutes in the preseason and showed enough in practices that they were kept on the roster heading into the last week before the regular season. Not including Brent Barry, who will be dealt or released before the season, the Rockets must still make one cut to have the roster at 15 players by Monday’s deadline. jonathan.feigen@chron.com EDIT: Correct story link http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/6678422.html
I'm sad to see Temple go. He's another Mike Harris - great attitude, hard worker... bad circumstance. I wasn't expecting much out of Beck. Now I only wish both Conroy and Pops could make the squad.
It'd be nice to drop dorsey and keep both of them, though I'm not sure if that's viable. At this point, pops looks like a rotation player and while conroy has shown potential, both brooks and lowry are significantly better. I think carrying a third pg would be fine but if I have to choose between conroy and pops, it seems like pops is a no-brainer.
I would agree with you there except I actually like Conroy more than Jermaine at this point, so I'd like to keep both. I held out on Dorsey for a long time but it looks like his time is about up.
This was no real surprise obviously. At this point, I think Pops is a near lock to make this team. He just brings too much to the table for him not to make it. I have been impressed with Conroy though, so maybe he can be one of those guys that ends up with a couple 10-day deals when we find ourselves down a man.
While I agree that Pops should make the squad, he will NOT be a regular member of the rotation. He'll be the fifth big man (behind Scola, Landry, Hayes and Andersen, all of whom Morey has publicly stated are the likely big man rotation) and will provide some depth. Depth that Joey Dorsey doesn't seem able to provide. I agree that keeping Conroy over Dorsey is the right move, basketball-wise. Let's just see if Les is willing to shell out the extra salary and luxury tax associated with eating Dorsey's guaranteed contract. Let alone whatever partial guarantee that Dorsey has for 2010-11.
i have a feeling if Pops get cut, there will be a team that would sign him pretty fast. He showed a lot of good things in the preseason. I hope Pop's get with us, his energy is great. Reminds me of Landry.
Rockets should keep Pops and Conroy. Some how the Rockets should try and trade Dorsey for 2nd round pick or cash.
More likely, they'll have to trade Dorsey, a 2nd rounder plus cash to another team just to take him. A la Steve Francis 2009 (and soon to be Brian Cook 2010).
I hope the Rockets keep both Pops and Conroy. They need Pops to play more minutes than Andersen who I think is an offensive blackhole. I have noticed that, more often than not, Andersen shoots, or tries to shoot the ball whenever he gets it. It is almost like passing is always an afterthought for him. Pops is a better interior defender and hangs around the basket for rebounds and occasional interior passes for dunks. Conroy has the instincts and handle for a true pt. guard. He also has a knack for organizing the offense, good defender, and the poise and leadership of a good pt. guard. Good luck to the players who were cut, they were pretty good too but just got caught up in the numbers game. I hope other teams sign them up quickly.
Thats subjective I think, cuz Pops doesnt pass any better than Andersen. I guess its more about finishing style after receiving a pass, instead of a chucker have a dunker. Maybe Andersen might be a black hole, but remember this is preseason and about establishing their offense in the system. I've seen people say they havent been "impressed" with Conroy. I think he's doing exactly what a 3rd point guard should do, run the offense, deliver the pass, play decent D, dont call your own number too much.
Can't we just outright cut Cook? What would be the ramifications of that? A buyout? Would the salary still hit our books, or would he be able to come off right then?
Pops has earned a roster spot. Barring an extreme mental fubar, expect him to be a Rocket this season.
