T-Mac's shooting, but he's doubtful to play

Rockets guard Tracy McGrady picked up his regimen of shooting and therapy, but is considered doubtful to play Wednesday in Portland, with some chance he could be cleared in time to play Friday in San Antonio.

That would depend on how McGrady reacts to Tuesday's workout, another today and the flight on Thursday.

"I wasn't allowed to run," McGrady said. "I'm better. I did some work in the pool, but it's nothing compared to running on the court."

    No defense
With the Rockets allowing 106.5 points per game in the past four games, Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy has pinpointed the areas in need of improvement — all of them.

"We have to play defense better than we have, obviously, in all facets: we're fouling too much, (allowing) too much in the paint, post defense, pick-and-roll defense, one-on-one defense, basically everything," Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy said facing a run of "quality offensive teams" has something to do with the decline. But playing small with Tracy McGrady and Kirk Snyder out, the Rockets had trouble covering for size mismatches in the backcourt.

"We don't like to look up at the scoreboard and see us giving up 100 points," guard Luther Head said. "We think we're a better defensive team than that. I think it's worse to give up 100 than it is for us to score 100. They're scoring too easy. Coach preaches making a guy go to his second move instead of beating you on his first move. We're not doing that."

Forward Chuck Hayes said: "Giving up 106, that's just terrible defense. There is no excuse for that. We're putting them at the free-throw line or giving up layups — that's terrible defense."

    Trail Blazers update
Portland comes in with a four-game wining streak and a four-day break, but Zach Randoph, who has helped key the run, could be out with a sprained right foot. Rookie guard Brandon Roy is also questionable.

    Rockets update
Yao Ming was over the back soreness and stomach illness that bothered him on Sunday. ... The Rockets have slipped badly defensively since Tracy McGrady has been out, allowing an average of 106.5 points in the four games. ... Last season, the Rockets beat the Trail Blazers by an average of 16 points in the two games McGrady and Yao played, but lost 76-75 in Portland without them to snap a nine-game Houston winning streak over the Trail Blazers.

Something to check out vs. Blazers
The Rockets' defense. They committed 27 personal fouls on Sunday, and the Trail Blazers are a strong free-throw shooting team (78.5 percent.)

    Statistically speaking
Zach Randolph is the only NBA player averaging at least 25 points and 10 rebounds (Yao Ming averages 9.9 rebounds).

Those JVG quotes are just further evidence that Rafer will be splitting time with Head once everyone is healthy, not sharing the court together.

I'm sure he means giving up 100+ or scoring 100+.

I.e. Chances of winning for the Rockets is greater if they hold opponents under 100 points, as opposed to their chances if they score over 100 points.

So what?? just because you are going to the game means he has to play? Doesnt Tmacs best interest serve up a better reason to play or not play? :D

Bruce Bowen is also going to the game, which is every reason he should not play.

Tmac should go to every game b/c we buy those tickets to help pay his salary :p If he's able, he should play. I imagine if he's able, he'll want to play...of course last time I said, that someone laughed at me.

He missed the game I bought against the Lakers. He still owes me.
