Intriguing and typical JVGish quotes

"I don't like feeling unsure, but I'm not sure there is any way around it," he said of the rookies' place in the rotation.

"I'm still completely unsure about the fifth starter and what fits best," he said.

Ok, I was more worried about Yao's ankle and here is Chron's Rockets Notes:

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/4291535.html

"It's fine," Yao said. "(Sitting out) was for safety. I was just boxing out for a defensive rebound, and I was pushed from behind. My ankle got bent over too far. It's not a big problem."

Asked if he could play in the season opener on Wednesday, Yao said, "Yeah, of course."

And then there is this Wells' love for PRACTICE (repeat after AI  ):

"It's fine," Yao said. "(Sitting out) was for safety. I was just boxing out for a defensive rebound, and I was pushed from behind. My ankle got bent over too far. It's not a big problem."

Asked if he could play in the season opener on Wednesday, Yao said, "Yeah, of course."

I can see the appeal in starting Novak. By doing so we basically start with a big shooting lineup - Alston, McGrady, Battier, Novak and Yao. This instantly creates mismatches at at least three positions for most teams, and more importantly surrounds Yao with four deadly three point shooters and two playmakers in the backcourt. Sounds like an ideal recipe for ambushing teams early and jumping out to a big lead.

The big question mark is whether Novak can provide enough defense etc. as a starter, given the fact that he *is* a rookie. I'm guessing the other guy who's contending for a starter's position would be Snyder...who gives you a more traditional two, and additional slasher and better defense.

It is fairly amazing that a 2nd round pick is already being considered as a starter on a team that is as deep as the Rockets. Talk about a draft steal.

I think you want to start defense. A stifling defense is the best way to jump on and demoralize opponents. Unless Snyder is in a real bad slump and can't keep opponents honest enough with his J--I think he should be the best 5th starter. Bonzi, Novak and Head can come in early to really poor it on offensively once we have worn them a little defensively and catch them slacking off the shooters.
