    By JONATHAN FEIGEN

An hour before the Rockets would face the New Orleans Hornets and roughly three hours before they would blow a lead in the final three minutes, coach Rick Adelman returned to the issue that has been a key to the team's chances since the preseason.

The Rockets had made progress in late-game situations, most recently holding on to beat Dallas on Thursday. But Adelman knew his team was learning, still feeling its way through those crucial parts of the game.

“We still — we've talked about this a lot — don't know when the game is on the line, who do we go to,” Adelman said. “We know who New Orleans is going to go to, but we're still trying to figure out who do we go to.”

    Some improvement

“Aaron is the guy who has the most ability that we have,” Adelman said. “He's so quick and fast, if he gets a step on somebody, he's going to get to the basket.

“There are two areas he has to get better at. One is the little pull-up jumper, which he can make. He doesn't look for it enough. The other is he's a scorer first. He's thinking about his shot. Eventually, he's got to learn how to find our big guys at the basket when they all converge on him. He doesn't have great size, (but) there are a lot of guys who don't have great size who have the ability to find people when they get to the basket. “Unfortunately, for Aaron right now, it's 100 miles per hour or nothing. When he gets around the guy, sometimes you need to slow down and let the defense commit. That opens up the alleys for you. He still hasn't quite got to that point, but he has the most ability and most potential of all our guys.”

I think that's the most important line.

Watching the game with my wife (both of us have been Rockets fans since she was a teenager back in 1985), we both commented to each other that the ball and the shots should belong to Brooks in the waning minutes of the New Orleans game.

I know we tried to go to Landry, but the paint was well congested. Brooks should have been more involved in those last 3 minutes. Good things usually happen. Brooks is that talented.

I wonder what RA thinks that Brooks' ceiling may be. He's already better than I thought he would be.

Aaron Brooks is the third best point guard I've coached and what's even better is that he could be the solely best one day.

"Chuck Hayes is our tallest starting center"

"Luis Scola is the best spanish-speaker in the lineup"

"David Andersen is one of our best two guys from the southern hemisphere"

Adelman pointed out the key points.

Maybe Brooks is a good player, but he is not a GREAT player so far.

All the points Adelman pointed out are what a all-star player should have.

Let see whether brooks can achieve it or not, if he can't, trade a all star player is a must in the next season.

I'm assuming Rick ranks Bibby at the top. Who is next? Terry Porter?

I don't care what Brooks does, just as long as he doesn't pass the ball to Ariza.

Ming, would you please decrease the size of your sig? I am finding it distracting and it takes up a lot of space on an individual page of a thread. Thanks -
    Laura :)

    From the article:
I'm wondering how much Brooks will be able to develop this skill at this point of his career. It will require him not only to gain the ability to switch gears but also improve his court vision. Not easy to do IMO.

Wow, at least Adelman had the balls to call him out for not giving up the ball. In my opinion, Ariza and Brooks are the two players on the team that just don't fit well in Adelman's system. Both want to be the man and both take way too many ill advised shots. Brooks is becoming more and more like a Stephon Marbury on the court. He holds onto the ball on fast breaks instead of advancing it, just so he can score or get credit for an assist. Same **** Marbury used to do. In his eyes, as long as he has the ball, he is going to get a number in the box score by either scoring, getting to the line, or if the defense forces him, passing off for the assist.

The easy answer is a TRADE. Aaron Brooks will never have as high a trade value as he does right now. His agent will command a 9-11 Million Dollar contract after next season. Easy to move him now with his rookie contract...

    Rockets Get:

    Prince
    Hamilton
    Hinrich

    Pistons Get:

    McGrady
    Brooks

    Bulls Get:

    Ariza
    Cook
    Dorsey

So wait, is RA saying he isn't satisfied with AB? If you read in between the lines, nothing positive is coming out of his mouth. His comment about AB being the best they have is very interesting...maybe he is open to a complete overhaul of the team?

Man, I've been saying the same exact thing with my wife (also a Rockets fan, heck she showed me this bbs!). He has the tools, but can he be the go-to-guy. I don't know how Rick feels about it, but I have my doubts. Prove me wrong AB!

AB's only in his 3rd year in the NBA...1st year as a FULL TIME starter. I've said this in a previous threads...AB has the potential to become a STEVE NASH type player. I have concluded this ONLY by comparing their numbers in the 1st 3 years of their careers..

Nash's first 4 years avgs: 7pts, 4asts (become a full time starter in his 3rd year)
AB's first 3 years avgs: 10.7 pts, 3asts (become a full time starter in his 3rd year...this year)

It wasnt until Nash's 5th season where he consistently began to avg more than 7asts a game. We've seen glimpses of AB's capability to do that.. I think in time, he'll become better at it. If he can give us 18ppg and 6-7asts a game, who can complain abt that?
