Its interesting how this works. If you cut taxes, you have to make up for that somewhere...or run a deficit.

    Article

The alternative is to add slot machines to Texas so we tax them for sinning. Talk about hypocrytes. Lets waive another carrot out there for those "bad" people that gamble and then tax the crap out of them. Way to go.

Or reduce spending...or create a larger tax base. Texas should have a higher tax, but the US should have a much lower tax so that States could best decide what their needs are.

I would be for a reasonble Texas Hold'em tax!!!

Am I missing something on the Internet tax issue. Because I'm pretty sure I'm am currently being taxed for my broadband usage according to my TimeWarner bill.

What is W proposing if not the elimination on that tax? Is he proposing that we shouldn't be allowed to add additional taxes on top of that? I wasn't even aware that we were looking to do so?

    I'm seriously asking here.

    1. He's eliminating another tax while Federal spending continues to increase.

    OR

    2. He's proposing to stop something that nobody was aware was even an issue. Big woop. How does that really help?

There's so many taxes and fees in telecommunication that its sometimes hard to keep track.

I get my broadband service through my phone company, Qwest. There isn't a tax for my DSL but there are taxes for the phone line and they're on the same bill. If you get your broadband service through Time Warner I'm guessing it comes with your cable bill so you might be seeing taxes for your cable line and not your broadband.

The tax you pay on your Time/Warner broadband, etc. bill is the state (and local? would have to check) sales tax. What Bush has been talking about is not allowing states to use their sales tax to tax internet transactions. They're not allowed now to do that because of a law Congress passed, if I'm not mistaken. Ironically, it hurts Texas more than most states to not tax internet sales because we depend so much on the sales tax... on the state and local level, to fund the government.

Okay, so is somebody proposing to tax broadband services differently than what we already have through our phone or cable bills?

I never heard of that (wouldn't be the first :) ).

It seems like W is giving us relief on a non-issue? Gee, thanks.

Well this info should have been posted in the net tax thread:)

Does this mean if i buy something online, i don't pay sales tax, but if i buy the exact same thing from the same store, but at the counter, i do?

    Crazy.

    not exactly

if you live in the state where it is sold, you pay sales tax

    example

you buy a widget from XYZ Inc., you live in Texas, XYZ is in Cali, you dont pay sales tax

you buy a widget from XYZ, you live in texas, XYZ is in Texas, you DO pay sales tax

that's the way its been since i can remeber online

Interestingly USA is right up there as the least taxed developed nation.

And that's a bad thing!!!!!!!! Are you crazy? Our taxes could be (and should be) lower still. Much lower. Instead, much of our money, two trillion in fact, is wasted at the Federal level on various boondoogles and vote-buying schemes to nuture the vote of a dependent class. It is a sin that our Imperial Federal Govt requires a 2-TRILLION dollar budget!

Agreed. Similarly, our spending could be (and should be) lower still.

I'm certainly not a fan of Craddick's up-to-100% movie attendance tax, apparently on top of the sales tax that's already paid on movie tickets.

And I'm sure a lot of us wouldn't be fans of Perry's $5 strip club admission tax.

Say what?? Please tell me that was tongue in cheek. Surely that idiot, Craddick, hasn't proposed something so demented and such a slam at the people of Texas. Don't we want to encourage families to get out and enjoy a film?

What nonsense. Please tell me you're joking, mrpaige!

There's a $1 surcharge on amusements tickets, including movie tickets. That would apparently apply across the board, including at the $1 movie theaters.
