What a landmark. I feel like my vote was validated today.

I'd like to hear from some of our more religious posters on this.

How does this affect your view/opinion of President Obama?

Are you for or against giving the secular community a voice in government? If so, why or why not?

I have to think that after decades of religious leaders (in some cases, dangerous extremists... do I need to name names?) having the ears, or in some cases, being asked directly for policy and foreign relations advice, it is about time that the non-believers got their say.

Let everyone talk. Quite simply, anything else is discrimination.

As a deeply religious Christian individual who voted for Obama, this doesn't bother me in the least. I didn't elect Obama to be my religious advisor, so it doesn't bother me when he doesn't act like one. While I would certainly wish that "non-believers" could find the same joy in faith that I find in mine, their opinions as citizens of this country are no less important or worthy of being heard than mine, either.

I would hope that most conservatives & faith-driven religious individuals would find no problems with this...but there will be a few nutjobs who do and they'll give us people to make fun of. :)

This is a good start. This country has such a long way to go when it comes to making the average citizen recognize the value of a secular government and I can't think of a better person to jump start this than the President. I'm sure the far right will use this as more ammo for their "Obama wants to destroy America" rhetoric but I think Obama has realized now that those people are going to hate no matter what so he might was well do what he thinks is best and ignore them.

According to the Constitution the government is supposed to be secular.

I have absolutely no problem with any President meeting with an atheistic group. I do take issue with this line in the article:

"but it's taken them a while to get their voice heard by the government"

Perhaps the line is poorly written in so much as it may convey a different meaning, but the atheistic voice has been heard by the government prior to this.

Every time I read the comments in the politics or science section of the Chronicle it makes me remember why I plan on living somewhere more progressive soon. Even if they are a small minority or simple-minded folks, they scare the hell out of me.
