Smith finally gets the nod to run defense; 3 spots still to fill

New Texans coach Gary Kubiak added three more assistants to his first staff on Thursday.

Syracuse offensive coordinator Brian Pariani, who worked with Kubiak for 10 years in Denver, will coach the tight ends. Before leaving for Syracuse last year, Pariani coached the Broncos' tight ends for 10 years under Mike Shanahan.

Mike McDaniel, a coaching intern with the Broncos, has been hired as offensive quality control coach. Robert Saleh, a coaching intern under Dom Capers last season, is the new defensive quality control coach.

The Texans finally announced that Richard Smith officially has been hired as their defensive coordinator.

Kubiak still has three positions coaches to hire. He expects to hear from Mike Sherman next week. He offered Sherman a job as assistant head coach/offensive line.

Kubiak also needs to hire assistants to coach linebackers and the defensive line. He also may add an assistant position coach or two.

"For Chicago, he is constantly analyzing opposing defenses, studying what schemes and formation used for each different situation dictated by down and distance. He also studies what personnel are on the field at what time, and he does it all one week in advance.

For example, this week the Bears were coming off a Sunday night victory against the 49ers. On Monday morning, Bajakian already had his reports on the New York Giants, who the Bears play tomorrow, for his superiors. “I like the analytical part of it,” Bajakian said. “There’s a lot of technology involved with it, the different video systems used and what not. I guess the old math teacher in me comes out, I’m enjoying it, and not in a big hurry to move on.” Your guess is as good as Bajakian’s on his next step. Since the offensive quality control position is considered an entry-level position, he said, the next logical step would be a full-time position coach somewhere.
