Knicks' Curry pays big price for waking Yao
After challenging Rockets star early, New York center is taken to school

Rockets center Yao Ming didn't need a refresher course on how much of a load New York Knicks center Eddy Curry is in the paint. But just in case Yao forgot all he learned last weekend at Madison Square Garden, Curry gave him something to jar his memory.

Yao and Curry were engaged in a gripping battle when Curry answered two Yao baskets — a seven-foot fadeaway and an 11-foot jumper — with a thunderous dunk over Yao that merited a spirited response from the 13,975 at Toyota Center. Curry not only left the crowd in awe, he got Yao's attention.

"I think that waked me up," Yao said. "That's like a hammer waked me up."

    Whole new ballgame
That moment, one in which Curry took the fight to Yao, signaled a turning point more than a harbinger of what was to come. Shaken and stirred, Yao replied with an efficient effort that saw him lay waste to Curry and every other center on the Knicks' roster.

On a Sunday night when Tracy McGrady was anything but effective, Yao finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Rockets to a 90-83 win.

After scoring 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting against the Utah Jazz on Saturday, Yao made his first five shot attempts and eight of his first 10 before tiring in the fourth quarter Sunday.

The Rockets got Yao involved early and he seemed to ride that wave of confidence throughout the game, utilizing an array of moves to wear down the Knicks.

"We've got to get him going," Rockets guard Rafer Alston said. "We've got to get him the ball, let him operate, give him some room, cut. If he throws it out, try to throw it back in there. It's hard for guys to stop a guy like that — 7-6 with nice touch and good moves around the basket."

    Taking over the paint
Yao answered the Curry dunk with one of his own, giving the Rockets a 16-13 lead with 4:47 left in the first quarter. On the previous defensive possession, he drew a charge from Knicks guard Quentin Richardson, something he would do to Curry early in the third.

In the meantime, Yao continued to work over Curry and his backup, Jerome James. Both appeared helpless in keeping Yao from establishing position on the block. Yao tallied three free throws and two seven-foot jumpers in a seven-point second quarter.

"He's playing with a lot of confidence, and that's the biggest surprise, especially coming back from the injury," Alston said.

Curry started 3-for-4 but missed his final four shots. He picked up his third foul charging Yao with 10:28 left in the third. His fifth and sixth came 16 seconds apart in the fourth, with Curry fouling out trying to guard Yao at the 9:03 mark.

"I think foul trouble had a big part in (Yao's success)," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Obviously Curry was limited by fouls."

    Lights out for Knicks
Jackie Butler, the third center off the New York bench, picked up three fouls in nine minutes. After Curry woke Yao with his dunk, Yao spent the night putting the Knicks to sleep.

"Everybody is going to have some bad nights, bad moments," Yao said. "I know I'm not the only one on the court.

"I have teammates to support me, so I know I will play well."

Yao is looking good. Time to give him some love :D.

Since he's come back from his toe injury...

    21.7 ppg --- 10.1 rpg --- 2.29 bpg

Is it just me or has he been looking relentless lately going at the other teams?

Also he's been showing a few more moves besides just powering in down low. What's up with that?

    Keep it up Yao!.

Yao is becoming a problem solver on the court. Good news to Rockets.

Yao is dominating and making it look effortless.

I think Alston hit the key word there: confidence. Yao is oozing with confidence, he doesn't lay down and take a beating anymore, he responds in like fashion.

This is the Yao we have wanted all along, it's been 4 years in the making, but it has been worth the wait.

Yao is becoming a leader, and it helps SOOOOOO much to have a guy like Alston with him on the court, because he seeks out Yao like no one does on this team besides McGrady, and Jon Barry when he plays.

Now, if JVG can insert a lineup of Alston, McGrady, and Barry at the same time, Yao's production will shoot up even more.

I think he has really worked on that up fake. He might have taken a page out of TMac's book on that one. TMac uses that up fake like nobody else on the perimeter. Now, Yao's using it in the post. I had to laugh, he threw the fake so hard on one of those possessions, it actually threw him off balance and he traveled.

Eddy Curry is a load offensively. I had no idea he was that big and strong, but he was moving Yao and Deke deep into the post and holding his position.

Yao looks damn good for coming off a 21-game layoff. He's playing the best basketball of his NBA career. His minutes are up, yet he's still effective, and I don't worry about him on back-to-backs anymore. He looks like he hasn't missed any time out at all. He still gets blocked a lot, but 24 points on 13 shots? I expect he'll have a lot of games like this in the future.

Yao is looking quicker, more like the old Yao. Must be nice not to have a red hot poker sticking in your big toe. I was struck by how he was operating further away from the basket, on offense, making his spin moves and jump shots from mid range. This has been missing during the last year. I had wondered if the old Yao had dissapeared because of weight training and Pat Ewing training. I now think his game was hurt by the mangled, diseased, festering, big toe. Yao might be ready to soar. Also, huge respect and admiration for pracitcing and playing in massive pain, doing his job and not compaining. Yao is heroic.

The one difference i see in Yao is that he's no longer afraid to miss. He used to miss a shot and get down big on himself and he'd disappear the rest of the game. Now he's got the short term memory going and has forgotten about the last miss and keeps shooting it with confidence. the one dunk he had when he came down after being fouled.

Was that like a slight shimmy? :D

I was at the game and was impressed with his game - in particular, I sat in my seat most of the night marvelling how far he's come since his first couple of seasons. The blocks he had were aggressive and sharp. He's making decisive, assertive moves in the paint with tons more confidence. Really great to see out of him.

Here's to him shutting up guys like Bill Simmons that love to take ignorant, undeserved shots at him.

nice to see yao play the way he is, also i like how he tries to go up for dunks now whenever possible instead of laying it in. other than the laker game he has been pretty aggressive in the games he has been back. hopefully barry will be back soon, he used to be the best passer on the team after tracy last year. yeah if he,t-mac and alston are in the same lineup as yao you can expect yao to get a lot of good touches

Does that mean he is mastering the art of flopping? :)

I hope he doesnt become a master flopper but yeah to Yao finally playing to his potential (minus the rebounding).

Once he learns to position himself better for rebounds which includes sealing his man and timing his jump better he will be the total package.

It also appears at Yao plays more aggresively and takes it to the other team, the refs give him more respect.

He's getting foul calls this year that he hasn't gotten in the past.
