really interesting read. through all of the reports which came flying at us from all directions and spins from both sides it's nice to put everything in place. i don't think either side was wrong. both parties tried to do what was best for themselves. i surely hope that a deal is reached with adleman soon. i hate not hearing anything.
I am not sure why this isn't more documented • Thursday, May 10 — Morey calls Van Gundy to ask if he could have Adelman call him. When Adelman reached Van Gundy by phone, Van Gundy tells Adelman his return to the Rockets is uncertain and that he should take the interview
The Chron missed this one. Saturday May 12 - Larry Brown drives over to have dinner with his East Hampton neighbor to discuss the open head coaching job of the Houston Rockets. Brown makes a compelling case based on his hall of fame resume. Les tells Brown he will strongly consider him. I don't think Adelman is a done deal yet, you don't pay a guy $20-25M without evaluating/interviewing other candidates first. Nobody that has a head coaching vacancy in the league has filled the spot overnight, Indiana, Sacramento and Memphis have been without coaches for weeks. Expect the Rox to be as deliberate as them.
Only if Larry agrees to be "up tempo phoenix like" After 14 years of owning the Rockets, we now have direct proof that Leslie has decided that marketing > winning.
Winning comes first. No if's and but's about it. However, you've got to admit that the Rockets certainly need the marketing. Houstonians don't care about the Rockets as much as the Texans & Astros. Why is that? I don't know. I know it's not all about winning. The Texans haven't done a thing since their inception and yet it seems like they're more popular than the Rockets. It really sickens me.
The Rockets needed to ask JVG clearly, "WTF do you want, moron?" Day one, JVG told the Rockets he was not sure and wanted another position. Next day, JVG told the Rockets he wanted to return only with Les's endorsement and allowed the Rockets to look for a new coach. The day after, with knowing the Rockets had spoken with Adelman, JVG wanted to return without endorsement. Later, the Rockets offered another position to have a good divorce but JVG tried to make it looked like he was shafted. What a f*cking moron! You're not that good. Two freaking drama in your mediocre resume, I doubt you find another coaching job in NBA.
Cannot really compare Indy, Sac or Memphis to Houston. For unemployed coaches, Houston is definitely the "hot" choice. So Houston gets to pick the coach from the pool of available coaches. The other teams have to fight for coaches.
Umm, his reputation is as high as any active former coach out there (save maybe Larry Brown - though Brown is radioactive to owners now) and his phone would be ringing off the hook if he said he wanted to coach again. If he doesn't coach again it will be his decision.
JVG got what he wanted. He can now ponder his future while the Rockets move on. Les was not going to beg and get on his knees for a coach with a horrible playoff record (with the Rockets), who is indecisive, and not willing to change his style. Good luck to him finding another NBA job.
Ugh. We DONT HAVE 'Phoenix-like players'. Yao can't even outquick Okur. Which one, Hays or Howard, will explode toward the basket? How many of our guys can consistently hit jumpers? There are a lot of areas we need improvement. But if THIS is the primary focus of our team and its future, we're f**ked. Hopefully Adelman (or whoever) will ignore Alexander's theory as completely as Van Gundy did.
Are you Brown's assistant? The only two jobs related to Brown are Bobcat and Memphish which Brown has a relationship to their owners. Oh! Dont forget Brown has a championship and he is a HOFer. While JVG belongs to the HOS.
More and more I'm coming around to the idea that Van Gundy thought he'd get through the first round of the playoffs, at least, and would be dealing with the question of his return from a position of strength. He treated the question as though the timing were up to him, that he'd get around to it when he was comfortable doing so, and the Rockets would wait. But the first-round exit changed everything, and he failed to absorb that till it was too late. Not the first time he failed to make a timely adjustment.
Baseball I can see with the Astros success recently, but I have to admit that turning on the radio and hearing Texans talk all day is a bit anoying. The Texans are horrible and will struggle to win 6 games next year yet they are the talk of the town. Must be the popularity of the NFL because it's not the Texans winning record.
