    Jacobsen on Rockets' radar
Ewing resigns to devote more time to family

The Rockets could be close to adding shooter Casey Jacobsen to their retooled backcourt, potentially giving them five guard additions since last season.

Jacobsen, a first-round pick out of Stanford by the Phoenix Suns in 2002, was offered a partially guaranteed contract with the Rockets after a strong season with European power Tau Ceramica (Vitoria, Spain) and in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Jacobsen, who is not likely to sign until the middle of next week, would join Vassilis Spanoulis, Kirk Snyder, John Lucas III and Kelenna Azubuike as backcourt additions since last season. Guards Rafer Alston and Luther Head have had one season with the Rockets.

Jacobsen averaged 16.4 points on 54 percent shooting with the Nuggets' summer league team after averaging nine points last season for Tau Ceramica. He averaged 5.9 points on 39.9 percent shooting and 37 percent 3-point shooting in three seasons with the Suns and Hornets.

While the Rockets were close to padding their roster, they announced a reduction in their coaching staff with the resignation of assistant Patrick Ewing.

"It was a difficult decision to resign because I enjoy coaching," Ewing said in a statement. "I love working with Jeff (Van Gundy) and the rest of the staff, and our players are really good guys. But my children are getting older, and I want to spend more time with them. I'm sure at some point I will get back into coaching, but right now I need to focus completely on my kids."

Ewing told Van Gundy after the season that he intended to step down, but Van Gundy asked him to take most of the summer to reconsider.

"He felt strongly he needed to be in New York with his daughters, and it also will allow him to watch his son play at Georgetown," Van Gundy said. "He did a tremendous job.

"People don't realize the respect our players had for him for what he did on the floor and the way he went about his job. I think he was finding his coaching voice more and more as he gained more experience."

Van Gundy said Ewing would not be replaced on the staff.

Charlie Ward, in his second season as a coach, is expected to take on more of Ewing's duties. Assistant head coach Tom Thibodeau has been working with center Yao Ming in Houston and in the past two offseasons in China.

It will be improved under Van Gundy. Guy is smart, went to Stanford, and still young at 25, and a good shooter with good size and decent athleticism. It's obvious what we're doing, getting bombers on the floor.

Link= Casey Jacobsen turns down Nuggets

So Jacobsen will be getting approximately $800,000/yr if this deal with Rockets is confirmed.

How about Howard, Snyder, and Bowen to Portland for Lafrentz. Then we sign Azuibuke and Jacobsen?

It looks to me like us bringing both Azuibuke and Jacobsen pretty much spells the end for Sura.

Heck no! Azuibuke and Jacobsen are unproven and you are trying to take out snyder from a team that lacks experience and talent at SG.

Actually not that great a shooter...

This guy was in the NBA for 3 years but ended up playing in Spain. Couldn't shoot that well in the NBA. However - he is tall for a 2. Doesn't seem too moneyball to me.

Why do you want Lafrentz when you could have Randolph? They have basically the same salaries, except Randolph's much younger, has more potential, and definitely and not a 1-trick pony.

Because Raef has 3 point range and Zach does not. Because Raef is better defensively than Zach. Because Zach is another Juwan Howard with the midrange jumper that will clog up the pick-n-roll with 111, and clog up the offense by holding the bball and he won't play D.

Why are we looking at these guys if we aren't considering moving multiple players that will leave us some roster spots? Or are we just going to waive Rybo and get Sura to retire?

I saw couple games when he played for the Suns and he shoots 3s really good. Hes a pure shooter and thats why rox are trying to sign him. Rox still lack outside shooters so i think this will be a good move. Reminds me of Erik Pike.

Just if ne1 wanted more info on the guy....

Regarded as one of college basketball's finest outside shooters, the Phoenix Suns took Stanford sharpshooter Casey Jacobsen with the 22nd pick overall in the 2002 NBA Draft... Often compared to several former Suns, including Danny Ainge, Dan Majerle and Jeff Hornacek, Jacobsen struggled to shoot at a high percentage during his rookie campaign in 2002-03 and finished with a .373 field goal percentage, including a .315 3FG... Heading into his third season in 2004-05, Jacobsen gives the Suns significant depth at the shooting guard position along with Joe Johnson, and will likely be one of the team's top three-point gunners.

    2003-04:
Improved upon his rookie season by increasing his averages in points (6.0), rebounds (2.6), assists (1.3), field goal percentage (.417), three-point field percentage (.417), free throw percentage (.820), minutes (23.4) and games played (78)... Became the first Suns player since Rodney Rogers (1999-00) to rank in the top 10 in the NBA in 3FG% (.417, 9th)... Was the recipient of the second annual Dan Majerle Hustle Award, which was selected based on the results of five voting categories: fans (who cast their ballots online at Suns.com), Suns players, coaches, employees and by Majerle himself... Scored in double figures in 20 games with a season-high 18 points vs. Utah on Feb. 7... Averaged 8.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, .422 FG and .425 3FG in 34.2 minutes in 13 starts after making none last season... Sank at least one trey in 48 of 78 games, including two or more 16 times... Was a perfect 6-6 from the field, including 5-5 from three-point range en route to a 17-point performance vs. San Antonio on Jan. 23.
    2002-03:
In rookie NBA season played in 72 games and averaged 15.9 minutes in those appearances... Tallied 10-plus points 11 times... Hit two or more three-pointers in a game 13 times... 52 of his 119 (44%) made baskets this season were three-pointers... Averaged 6.9 points in December and 6.2 points in January... Had 6 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds in regular season finale at Seattle... Scored 9 points with 2 rebounds, 3 assists in 24 minutes at Portland on April 15, his most minutes since Feb. 23... Tallied 15 of his 17 points in second half at the Clippers on Jan. 31 with 8 points (4-5 FG) in fourth quarter... Had 14 points (5-9 FG, 3-7 3FG) at New York on Jan. 26... Scored all 12 of his points in fourth quarter vs. Dallas on Jan. 17... Had 14 points at Cleveland on Dec. 29 with 11 points on 3-3 3FG in second half... Scored season-high 19 points on 5-7 3FG vs. Clippers on Dec. 27... Set season highs with 15 points, 4 steals and 33 mins at Sacramento on Dec. 17... Tallied 11 points on 4-6 FG and 3-5 3FG vs. Atlanta on Nov. 6. 2003 PLAYOFFS: Played in all six playoff games, but only scored in Game 5 when he made both of his three-point field goal attempts and finished with six points in 18 minutes played.

    College:
Named Second Team All-America by the Associated Press as a junior... Selected First Team All-America by the AP as a sophomore, the first AP First Team All-America player in school history... Three-time All-Pac-10 First Team selection, joining only 33 players in conference history... Was a candidate for the John Wooden and Naismith Player of the Year Awards as a sophomore and junior... Ranks third on Stanford?s career scoring list with 1,723 points ... Name appears in the Cardinal record book 49 times... As a junior, became Stanford?s first Pac-10 scoring champ since 1983-84 (Keith Jones)... As a freshman, named Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year, along with UCLA?s Jason Kapono.
