Major League Soccer has awarded the 2010 MLS All-Star Game to Houston, the Chronicle has learned.

League commissioner Don Garber will make an official announcement later today from Sandy, Utah, site of Wednesday's All-Star Game.

The date, opponent and venue for the event — either Robertson Stadium, home to the Dynamo, or the much bigger Reliant Stadium — will be announced at a later date.

This year's MLS All-Stars, which include Dynamo starters Geoff Cameron, Brad Davis and Stuart Holden, take on English club Everton on Wednesday in Sandy, Utah, under the direction of coach Dominic Kinnear.

In recent years, the MLS' midsummer classic has moved away from a traditional East-vs.-West format in favor of pitting a team of MLS All-Stars against an international club.

Past opponents have included Chivas Guadalajara (Mexico), Chelsea (England), Celtic (Scotland) and West Ham (England).

    Cool...

If they're going to bring in a team for them to play, hopefully they can go bigger than the last couple. Everton, West Ham, and Celtic are nice and all, but what's preventing them from bringing in a bigger club like when Chelsea came? Right now, Chelsea, Inter and AC Milan are traveling the US. Why not one of them to really fill the seats?

 Nice! I'm going just to see Cuauhtémoc Blanco, though. Why can't they play a Latin American football team, though? What about Boca Juniors or América de Cali or even a Mexican team?

Boo MLS for playing another already-formed and league team as their opponent. I've always hated this crap. Don't they have enough all-stars like MLB or NFL or even NBA?

PARK CITY, Utah -- Ever since landing an Major League Soccer team, Houston has proven to be one of the league's most vibrant markets. Now it will get a chance to play host to one of the league's premier events.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced that Houston has been chosen as the host city for the upcoming 2010 MLS All-Star Game, in a press conference at the Canyons Resort in Park City on Monday afternoon.

Garber said that the league has been pleasantly surprised by the passionate fanbase in the Houston area and the success of Dynamo organization since it put up roots in the city. Both factors make it an ideal location to host an all-star game.

"I don't think that people really expected that Houston, Texas would be a strong, powerful and successful MLS market," Garber said. "It's turned out to be one of our best."

Houston has been one of the more dominant MLS teams during its time in the league. The Dynamo won back-to-back MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007 and were Western Conference champions last season.

Dynamo president and general manager Oliver Luck thinks Houston will be an ideal host city for next year's All-Star Game because the ethnic and cultural makeup of city has made it a natural hotbed for soccer.

"I can't offer you the mountains like Salt Lake City has nor I can I offer you nice, cool temperatures," Luck said. "But there's a great fanbase in Houston and our fanbase will be extraordinarily excited about the opportunity to have the MLS All-Stars and a world-class club coming into play."

Reliant Stadium and Robertson Stadium are both possibilities to serve as the host stadium for the game. Robertson Stadium is the usual home stadium for the Dynamo. Reliant Stadium -- the home stadium for the Houston Texans -- has hosted Gold Cup games and international exhibitions in the past.

Garber speculated the league might draw a team from Mexico to play the MLS All-Stars in 2010, given the close proximity of the country to Houston.
