After watching this video, I have concluded that stealing cars must be a BLAST! <embed src="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f8/716758716" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" flashVars="videoId=20994703001&playerId=716758716&viewerSecureGatewayURL=https://console.brightcove.com/services/amfgateway&servicesURL=http://services.brightcove.com/services&cdnURL=http://admin.brightcove.com&domain=embed&autoStart=false&" base="http://admin.brightcove.com" name="flashObj" width="486" height="412" seamlesstabbing="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" swLiveConnect="true" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed>
could the legal savants in here explain to me, in laymens terms of course, how this is NOT entrapment?
As I understand it, they are simply leaving keys in an unlocked car. They are not forcing anyone to do anything. All the thieves had to do was not steal the car. Keys are probably left in unlocked cars plenty of times. That does not give anyone the right to steal it.
They're not forcing the car on the thieves? I thought entrapment was only if say the police had went around to people asking them to take the car. Of course, this is from a law class I took in high school, and Canadian law too.
Because a cop isn't telling them at gunpoint, hey go steal that grey camry right there or I'll kill you. No for realz. It's good to go. Just go steal it! Entrapment is the act of a law enforcement agent inducing a person to commit an offense which the person would otherwise have been unlikely to commit. Hidden cameras in cars have no influence on whether or not a car is going to get stolen.
Entrapment: is the act of a law enforcement agent inducing a person to commit an offense which the person would otherwise have been unlikely to commit. no, they didn't force them to steal it.......but they created an environment for them to steal it.... I don't sympathize the criminals.....I just find the whole idea of bait cars a lil suspicious. It's seems as if these people weren't planning on stealing that car.....but since it is there.......hmmm. oh well......sorry to derail thread. Carry on.
Every single day there is an environment created to allow someone to steal something or commit some other crime. Just because an iPod is in an uncloked car doesn't give anyone the right to steal it. I walk by "stealable" stuff every day. Since I am not a thief, I keep walking which is all those thieves needed to do. Those are not ordinary citizens who were compelled to do something they would not ordinarily do. They are thieves, pure and simple.
I see his point though. If I left my car running in front of a convenient store with the door open for a couple of hours, I'd be surprised if it wasn't stolen. If it were turned off and locked, I'd think it was pretty safe.
But you SHOULD have the right to leave the keys in your car and your car running without it getting stolen. I suspect the vast majority of people would simply walk by your running car without stealing it. A thief is a thief.
absolutely agree. They are criminals for sure. I just wish law enforcement agencies had a different method of busting 'em. Just my opinion.
I have never felt that much joy from completing a project at my job. I think it has inspired me to drop my profession in I/T and move to being an auto thief.
I agree, but you see my point, though. There is a reason our cars have locks on them, and there is a reason we use them: To deter.
With these bait cars, law enforcement will know where to look and automatically shut down these bait cars avoiding a chase. However there was one incident I remember reading in Dallas about a bait cars switch not working for the police to shut down the vehicle and they rammed into another car killing the driver. IMO I think this is the safest way to catch these thieves.
