I know there's a spring training thread, but I think this is relevant enough to warrant its own. This makes the backup catcher situation a lot simpler... Quintero has to be the huge favorite, unless Munson has a spectacular spring training (again). http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4582377.html
Man, that sucks. I really wanted to see what Gimenez can do. Everything I have read on him indicates that he is good behind the plate with a decent pop (8 HRs in 275 ABs in Round Rock).
When he shut it down in the VSL & then his shoulder still hurt after a month plus of rest, you kinda knew something was coming. Damn shame. I was pulling for him to make the team.
The one bit of good news is that they don't have to release him. They can place him on the 60 day DL. He was out of options and they would have had to waive him if he didn't beat out Quintero.
Catcher Lou Santangelo has had a year to remember in 2006. After getting married in June, Santangelo caught fire in July, hitting eight home runs in the month. The vaunted power hitter from Clemson University is currently tied for third in the Carolina League in home runs (18) and has thrown out a higher percentage of would-be basestealers than any other catcher in the league (41%). http://www.salemavalanche.com/cgi-bin/dist/news.cgi?id=17
Like most catchers, Gimenez certainly isn't fast. Maybe you're thinking of Jimerson, the outfielder? In which case, Quintero is better, but they're not really comparable seeing as how they have different positions.
