Probably this season, but after his bonus money is off the cap, he's very tradeable, and it's not like Vince is going to start this year. It was a foregone conclusion that they'd extend Carr, they weren't just going to let his contract expire.
I would think it would be the opposite for salary cap means (ability to prorate the bonus over multiple years = more cap friendly). But the NFL cap is a tricky thing, not sure if I understand it that well.
Geez. Carr isn't worth that much money, but what do you do? Because he isn't worth that much money, it will be near impossible to trade him.
Yeah, I don't know. What would happen if they didn't extend him? Does he walk free? I guess you don't want to let a 27 year old just leave.
ya, he walks. I'm not a big Carr fan, but I guess you can't just let him walk because you've invested so much already and he hasn't had much of a chance with the horrible coach and sub par O-line. I think the Texans did the right thing, but he's still way overpaid.
yeah just what the Texans need. Some competition for their overpaid franchise quarterback, while paying 1st overall pick money on a backup quarterback so they can compete. The team has about a zillion other holes to fill first.
Worked for the 49ers with Steve Young and Joe Montana, or the Cowboys with Staubach and Danny White, or the....well, you get the picture.... You just don't pass up on the most unique and talented player to come out in the draft since Bo Jackson....and at the most important position on the field. At least you don't if you want to win championships. Of course Bill Walsh and Don Shula could be wrong.... NOT ! DD
Actually, that's not true. A trade would be hard to complete because of the money the Texans must eat, not the team that gets Carr. The acceleration of the bonus money means that Carr's new team would only be responsible for his base salary, which is quite reasonable for a starting QB. The question is whether the Texans want to eat $8 mil of cap money next season.
The 49ers got Young for relatively nothing and were looking for a decent backup. Young had failed as a QB for the Tampa Bay Bucs and was considered a journeyman until his emergence with the 9ers. There really was no competition, Montana got hurt and the backup came in and stole the show. As for Staubach and White, before my time. Both of these situations were before the salary cap and rookie allotments. The Texans would be had pressed to afford both VY and Carr on the same roster.
