I couldn't find the link..but it was in this mornings edition. Not to start a Drayton-bash-fest, BUT....sure would be nice to have this guys pockets to compete for all these high priced free agents!!!!!
Anyone know the numbers of both their NETWORTH, I would bet Uncle Drayton has deeper pockets than Mark..
Yeah but the last time Uncle Drayton took a 5 dollar bill out , Abe Lincoln was blinded by the light. Obviously Drayton has as deep or deeper pockets than most anyone....but he runs a business while Cuban would run it like a fantasy team....just fun to think about.
You would be wrong. Mark Cuban is worth 1.8 Billion Drayton MacLane Jr is worth 1.2 Billion on a side note Bob McNair is worth 1.4 Billion
No cap, they could rival the friggin Yankees. That would be good for baseball. Bad for the Astros tho'.
Yeah, because Cuban's spending has resulted in much more playoff success for his team, than Drayton's conservative approach has for his team.
random but what's steinbrenner's net worth? or is it just revenue alone that allows for the huge ass payroll?
It's the much higher revenue. Drayton has a higher net worth than Steinbrenner. I could see Cuban raising the Pirates payroll possibly up to $100 million, but I doubt he'll be able to handle the losses if he jacked it up to the Yankees and Redsox salary realm.
The thing is, there aren't that many players out there who are difference makers who the Pirates could acquire. What's more likely to happen is that as soon as he took over and tried to raise the payroll the Pirates would end up with a number of overpriced players - and while they would be more talented, I don't think they'd be that much more talented. If he were to invest heavily in scouting and the minor league teams, that could lay the foundation for a dynasty.
On a sidenote, the Pirates ownership just announced that they won't sell to Cuban. AP - Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is interested in buying his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates, but the ownership told him the team isn't for sale despite its ongoing streak of 13 consecutive losing seasons. In an e-mail response to The Associated Press, Cuban said Monday he looked into buying the team recently, but "they told me they have no interest in selling." Cuban's interest in the team he grew up rooting for is well known, but this is the first time he has acknowledged wanting to buy the Pirates. Previously, he said he would look into acquiring a stake only if the Pirates were put up for sale or if acquiring a lesser share of the team would help keep it in Pittsburgh. "The Pirates are not for sale," club vice president Patty Paytas said, responding to Cuban's comment. The Pirates were bought 10 years ago by a group assembled by newspaper heir Kevin McClatchy, the managing general partner. The largest investor is Wheeling, W.Va., newspaper publisher G. Ogden Nutting and his two sons, who were initially brought into the group by McClatchy in 1996 and have since acquired at least a 25 percent stake of the 119-year-old franchise
This was a fairly big topic on the sports radio stations up here in Pittsburgh today. When ANYTHING is talked about except the Steelers, it's huge . . . I mean, they freaking carry Bill Cowher's weekly press conference on TWO stations, and then they have analysis afterwards . . . I miss SR610 more than I can say . . . Anyhow, the word up here is that people would LOVE to see a change in ownership, and a lot of folks think it will happen after the All-Star game is held here. IMO, Mark Cuban is just the owner the Pirates need to shake things up a bit. The Pirates do have some good young talent, and this would be an ideal time for Cuban to make a play for them, IMO.
