Radio personality Dan Patrick on Tuesday joined the 2006 GOP primary field to succeed retiring Republican state Sen. Jon Lindsay in District 7.

Patrick announced his candidacy on KSEV (700 AM) radio, during his regular afternoon drive-time show. The two-hour block of air time was a paid political advertisement, by the Dan Patrick for Senate campaign.

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt, Patrick's campaign treasurer, participated in Patrick's broadcast along with other conservative leaders, including physician Steven Hotze, who crusades for conservative Christian values in government. The show was broadcast live from Main Street Crossing in Tomball.

Patrick said he will focus on reducing property taxes and eliminating the pension state legislators receive. Legislators boosted their pensions, which have been tied to judicial salaries since 1975, by 22 percent during the last session.

Patrick also said he wants to focus on immigration.

"Until we stop the illegal flow of people coming in this country, our property taxes will continue to go up, our school taxes will go up, the cost of health care will go up," he said.

Other candidates in the March primary are Republican state Reps. Peggy Hamric and Joe Nixon and Houston City Councilman Mark Ellis. Nixon and Hamric are vacating safe seats to run. Ellis is term-limited.

Patrick said he will not take any money from political action committees, though he later qualified that by saying he won't take contributions from "any group or special interest that is against the people."

Patrick said he intends to keep his regular radio show until he officially files for office. The filing deadline is Jan. 2. Federal Communications Commission rules prohibit him from doing his show once he's formally a candidate.

Great, one of the guys that wanted to run the Rockets out of town teaming up with the worst sports radio talk show host in the history of mankind...

    I'm voting for Keith Olbermann!

Yeah different one, he has some different ideas, not all I believe in, but he did have an entertaining sports talk show back in the day.

    still does.

i remember listening to THIS Dan Patrick the morning of Game 7 in 1994 on my way to a job i had that summer at the Chronicle. he said, "don't worry, Houston. the Rockets will win, and you'll have your first major championship tonight."

Yeah I know, meant to type KSEV. Must have had a mental breakdown there when typing the title. Just got through reading ESPN Patrick's old interview with Lance Berkman (off takes) immediately before reading the Chron article about the KSEV PAtrick. .

Wow...with a team like that... you can be sure religion will stop illegal immigration from a state senate seat. I don't normally do this...but...

He used to own a sports bar (the bar that is currently BWW in Rice Village) that my brother was a bartender at. He said he loved working for him, he was a real nice guy that treated his employees well.

I sometimes listen to his radio show just for the comedy relief. Over the last few years, he's really gone over the edge. He cuts his callers off, talks over them, then hangs up on them saying "we lost the connection". All the typical talk radio cliches. Occasionally, he'll totally melt down, which makes for very entertaining radio!
