Back surgery could sideline Sura for season
Herniated disk forces gritty guard to sit out longer

DALLAS - The Rockets' hopes that guard Bob Sura could come back from the inactive list to bring the lift he did after last season's similar slow start have grown faint.

Sura, already out after undergoing two offseason knee surgeries, will undergo back surgery today at the University of Miami Medical Center to repair a herniated disk, Rockets trainer Keith Jones said.

Sura missed the first month of last season after suffering a back injury in late September, 2004. He averaged 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists, becoming one of just eight NBA players to average at least 10 points with five rebounds and five assists. But his right knee grew worse through the season.

He had his first knee surgery four days after the season ended, but when he failed to respond, a second surgery was performed in October with Sura saying the success of that procedure would determine whether he could ever play again.

In a workout this month, he felt a stabbing pain in his back. Examinations by Dr. Robert Watkins, the surgeon who performed Sura's previous back surgery, uncovered a herniated disk. Today's surgery will be performed by Dr. Barth Green.

Asked if the surgery could keep the 32-year-old guard from coming back this season, Jones said, "We'll see what comes from the surgery. It's possible."

The Rockets also might not get guard/forward Dion Glover back this season. Glover, who injured his right knee on the first day of training camp, had microfracture surgery last week.

Jones said it would be about six weeks before he could estimate when, or if, Glover would be able to play this season.

Feigen, you're my hero. AMAZING. We owe you.

Oh, and by the way that sucks about his back.

Possible? Hmmm... that could range from 5% to 80%

Man oh man, I hope this surgery turns out ok for Sura. Both for the team's sake and the sake of his family. OK, mostly for the team's sake. *sends good vibes*

When I saw the title my mind for some reason read McGrady in place of Sura and my heart literally skipped two beats.

I had no idea glover was injured. And now for the season too. Crazy. So much for all our depth with our guards.

The worst possible thing that could happen....is happening.

    Bring in Latrel!!!!!1

man that sucks for sura. i really feel bad for the guy. he is going to be in horrible shape by the time he is 50. crazy seeing how injuries just wreck a guy who is atheletic as he was. :(

Not to downplay the importance to Sura and his family (because that is terrible, and I feel for him), but this really blows for the Rockets. Watching them somewhat struggle this year has been painful, but I kept remembering that we'd have Sura back soon. I know he is the glue that holds this team together, but we are definitely better with him. So by not having him all year, I think we just took a couple steps down in the top 8 at the end of the season. Even if he's not out the entire season, we'll still suffer for it. I'm still expecting us to make the playoffs, but as far as how far we get...now I'm not so sure. :(

This is too much for Sura, being in the Year of the Knives. I wish him well.

Bob, quit playing bastketball. If you're single, get a wife and have some
kids. There's more to life than playing basketball.

i knew bob wasn't coming back. i don't think he will ever come back. we have to move on and hope that tmac or yao become the firey leader, and the attack dog that bob was.

    as for signing spree:

how does that replace bob? he can't play point. we have plenty of swingmen already. tmac, bowen, DA, JB, wesley, head. all play either the 2 or the 3. there are no minutes.

if anything we have to hope tmac takes enough time off to be sure that he can finish the season and playoffs at 100%.

Bad news, now another back surgery. He is probably going to retire, multiple surgeries and reinjures himself in a workout  He looks done. Spree is not going to be signed, he wants a 14M/2yr deal and would rather sit at home than play for the minimum. How about George Lynch?

:D Any doubt Feigen is reading this board?

    Other than that, bad news.

That's what you get for dating too many fat chicks

    I kid, I kid :p

Seriously though, before the beginning of the season I said the only thing to be concerned about are 'injuries' that could stop this team from even making the playoffs in the Western Conf. Sadly, this season seems to be headed in that exact direction. :(

Already conceding after less than a month? It has been a brutal month, to be sure, but everyone knew it would be. The season is a marathon, not a sprint, and we have plenty of time to make up ground. We may not vie for the 4 or 5 seeds, but if we miss the playoffs, I will be stunned.

Terrible news. We need Bobby Sura in the worst way. You know, it'll be a shame if all we ever get to see of Sura in a Rockets uniform was what we saw last season. I became such a big fan of him in such a short period. I hope he has some more healthy days with us.
