http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3028182 The Astros announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Tim Redding to a one-year, $750,000 base contract plus incentives. Redding, 26, finished 5-7 with a 5.72 ERA in 27 games (17 starts) for the Astros in 2004. He allowed 43 walks and struck out 56 batters in 100.2 innings. He opened last season in the fifth slot in the rotation, and was moved to the bullpen in July. In 91 career Major League games (72 starts), Redding is 21-28 with a 4.75 ERA over parts of four seasons from 2001-04.
It's stories like this that really tick me off. Congratulations to the Houston Astros for making such a vital move. I was really concerned about this season, but now I can rest easy. All we need now is to print our World Series tickets because with this signing, anyone who thinks that the Astros are not headed to the World Series is out of his/her damn mind. Excuse me while I go and drink my daily dose of Metamucil.
Not every signing is going to be a Beltran or Clemens. Moves like these have to be made too. The article doesn't say that Redding's going to be a savior or anything. Personally, I think he's going to have a breakout year in the bullpen. I say don't even give him a shot at the rotation because the inevitable failure will just mess with his head. Groom him for the pen from day one.
I agree, unfounded conclusion. But I think he could be a decent fill-in starter for injury times, spend some time in AAA, and maybe hold down the 5 spot if he does especially well. I really don't see his effectiveness in the bullpen based on his pitches
I won't go as far to say a breakout year but i think he'll be solid. He's always had great stuff, but gives up the big inning because he breaks down mentally. He's admitted that he does nothing but worry about the next start. Sticking him in the bullpen from Day 1 will hopefully allow him to relax a little more. Not knowing when you're going to pitch is a good thing in the case of Redding.
I think he is better than Duckworth...its a toss up between he and Munro....I would give pete a slight edge. I think that if he has 1 decent game in April, and someone calls about his availability, ship him out and don't look back.
Read that and I'm not sure why if you gave Redding that much, why you couldn't give an equal amount to Wade...A bum Wade is better than a completely healthy Redding, IMO...
IIRC Miller was arbitration eligible, and he would've earned a lot more than that at a hearing. I'm going to miss Miller, personally.
The least we could've signed Miller for was $2.75 million a year had we gone to arbitration with him. He signed for $1.5 million with the Red Sox which is double what we signed Redding for. As far as my feeling on Redding, it seems that he pitches decently out of the bullpen. Most people agree that he's got good stuff, just a lousy head on his shoulders. I think that if you don't even bother giving him a shot at the starting rotation and groom him for the bullpen, he could possibly breakout. Of course, I watch sports for the pure joy of it. I'm not gonna sit here and b**** and moan in early February about what our team may do in April and beyond. To me, if I'm not going to be optimistic about it, there's really no reason to pay attention. There are enough worries in our lives, baseball doesn't have to be another one.
In his career, Redding's 2-2 with a 7.17 ERA in relief. He was worse last season. I still think he's got good stuff, but I'd put him back in AAA to start the season until he demonstrates control of it.
Sam, What's a good site to find stats like that? I think I'm thinking of one outing last year and projecting for this year. That's a folly of being a complete optimist.
