" Rockets general manager Daryl Morey agreed. Like his coach and players, he would like stability with his roster. He would value cohesiveness. Keeping the core, even the bulk of his 42-win team together would make it better, especially defensively.

He just might not have that option.

Morey said he will "be aggressive to even do better than just bring Yao Ming back." He said no one, even Yao, is untouchable. And if the Rockets do land the sort of free agents they intend to pursue, stability and continuity might be sacrificed in the name of a sign-and-trade move.

"I do think stability helps you 100 percent," Morey said Thursday. "I think it helps you defensively. It helps you overall. If there is something compelling that will upgrade the team, you have to look at it. We will be active at the start of free agency. We’ll give, of course, our A-plus effort to try to upgrade the team there. We feel pretty good about our chances."

    What he really meant was...

"Look if Cleveland offered Lebron for Yao I would sell my right nut to pull of the deal" :p

    Yao no longer untouchable!

Morey said he will "be aggressive to even do better than just bring Yao Ming back." He said no one, even Yao, is untouchable. And if the Rockets do land the sort of free agents they intend to pursue, stability and continuity might be sacrificed in the name of a sign-and-trade move.

I like this... it doesn't sound like he's overly desperate but we are willing to pull the trigger if we get someone great in return...

Yao is not untouchable means he is touchable. Meaning he can participate in full contact practice now!

Wouldnt saying that Yao is untouchable make Yao want to weight his options even more. I mean if Yao opts out and NY gets Lebron, would Yao move to the big apple for 8-10 million range 3 year contract?

Yao's final year of his contract will be interesting, reality is he has awful negotiating leverage but team Yao will still probably demand a max contract.

Morey has to weigh his injury history and whether he is worth a max contract. I think he gets traded when you factor in everything, ie his prognosis for a slow recovery from his injury, his salary demands and the questions on how he'll fit in a motion offense.

I find it hard to believe Les would allow his cash cow to be traded for anything less than a superstar, it might be the safer on court move to trade Yao, but he makes Les a LOT of money.

This morning on 1560 Morey said he had to say it but hinted Strongly that Yao wasn't going anywhere. Granato even asked about Yao opting out and he said something like Yao will be back one way or another.

It's unlikely, still, this is the first time that option is on the table. If it lands us a quality big via trade then I see Morey pulling the trigger. It would have to be an absolute steal.

No one in the league is untouchable. I can even see some (highly highly unusual) cases in which CLE might consider trading Lebron James.

The question isn't who is touchable or not, it's whether trading this guy in a particular actually proposed deal (rather than one dreamed up by random internet guys) makes sense for the franchise. We'll see. I doubt that, given Yao's health issues, there is going to be a deal out there this summer that Morey would find beneficial.

Every other guy-- newly acquired Martin included-- are on the same boat. Morey will consider trading them, but will demand good value for them. Such demand probably will be deemed too high for other teams (it's been written that some other GMs think Morey overvalue his guys).

He's untouchable if we could get someone like LeBron for him but since that is not the case he most likely won't be traded.

I meant to say he's not untouchable if we could get a superstar for him.
