Link doesn't work. Here's the story: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/2901968 Accuser may not be Murphy's daughter By ANDREW TILGHMAN One of the women accusing former Houston Rockets star Calvin Murphy of sexual abuse may not be his daughter, testimony revealed this morning. The woman, who is 28, said she has always believed the retired basketball player and former TV commentator is her father. But Murphy's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, showed her court documents indicating that her mother was married to a man named Herbert Florence in 1976 when she was born. The woman wiped away tears as Hardin showed her documents that her mother sought a divorce in 1977 and terminated Florence's parental rights in 1981 because he failed to pay child support. "That didn't give him the right to do what he did," the woman said, referring to the alleged sexual abuse. The woman grew up living with her mother. Most of the incidents occurred at Murphy's home during overnight stays, she has testified. Murphy, 56, is charged with three counts each of indecency with a child and aggravated sexual assault. If convicted, the former National Basketball Association All-Star could face a sentence ranging from probation to life in prison. Murphy, who has 14 children by nine women, says the daughters are lying, seeking money and revenge because he did not treat them as well as the three children born to his ex-wife, Vernetta Murphy, defense lawyers said. The woman testifying this morning was the last of five women to testify that Murphy molested them more than 10 years ago. The woman previously said Murphy molested her repeatedly between the ages of 6 and 16. Hardin suggested the woman's portrayal of Murphy as a distant and sometimes violent father and child molester was not consistent with a man who pretended to be her father for nearly 30 years. "Not once did he say you're not my daughter anyway?" Hardin said. "No," the woman agreed.
how much would Rusty Hardin cost? he seems to be getting all the good clients I hoping everything works out for the best in this trial
Its a moot point anyway. I would be willing to bet money that Calvin will never see the Rocket's broadcast booth again no matter what verdict is reached.
Damn. Love the drama. Is the dream team working for Calvin. One by one these women are falling like pins. Barry sheck is about to blow out some mitochondrial dna evidence.
Well, just because Calvin is not her biological father doesn't necessarily mean that the jury is less likely to believe he abused her. She said she believed he was her biological father and he still clearly had access to her. It's not like she recanted or anything. Needless to say, I'm rooting for Calvin. It's nearly beyond my comprehension that he could abuse his own children in such a disgusting way. It's nearly as incredible to consider that a group of women could set out to destroy him in such a hateful manner, however. Obviously we may never know if it really happened or not.
I'm just trying to distance myself from the whole thing (which doesn't explain why I'm posting about it in this thread). I can understand why you may be rooting for Calvin because it's hard to believe he could be capable of something like that. However, I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to possible victims. But who knows? I think if Calvin were completely exonerated, there might be a small chance he could be brought back, but chances are, codell is right.
