Down 14-2 going into the 7th inning to the Mariners, the Indians exploded against Seattle and tied the game in the 9th, and are now going to extra innings. This was an absolute implosion by the Mariners bull-pen. If you thought the Pirates comeback against the Stros was bad, this was horrendous. How will the Mariners respond to this?
This is increditble... too bad the Indians couldn't pull it out in the 9th though. To extra innings-- go Indians!!!
I noticed this game myself. Anyone remember the Brewers/Padres game a few weeks ago where Davey Lopes b****ed about Rickey Henderson trying to run up the score in the 7th inning? Well, at the time, the Padres had only a 8-2 lead in the 7th inning, the Mariners had a lead double that in the very same inning. A few weeks ago, I posted that I thought baseball was stupid because of how seriously the unwritten rules were taken, main point in case the forementioned game where the manager threatened to throw at the next batter who tried to run up the score. Let's see what those same people who (some harshly) criticized my disgust with the 'unwritten' rules of baseball have to say about this horrendous choke by the Mariners. Even if the Mariners end up winning the game, this should prove once and for all that getting angry for 'running up the score' is a pathetic waste of time. The point is that even against some of the best pitching in baseball, anything can happen!!
yeah, rodney..because these kinds of things happen all the time in baseball. I mean, the last time a comeback like this happened was 1925....so you gotta watch out because that "once in a 75 year" experience can just sneak up on you anytime.
MadMax this is the 2nd time in the last couple weeks that it has happened that I know of, this game and the Astros Pirates game. A 7 run lead with 9 outs to go is NOT a given. Lopes is an idiot.
This has happened 2 times before in the entire history of baseball. Talk about a pathetic waste of time.

I mean, the last time a comeback like this happened was 1925....so you gotta watch out because that "once in a 75 year" experience can just sneak up on you anytime.</B> A week ago, the Astros blew a 6 run lead with 1 out to go. Last year, the Astros lost a 6 or 7 run lead in the 9th to the Brewers. That's 3 massive "once-in-a-lifetime" games in the last 12 months or so. Not only that, but the Milwaukee game w/ Lopez's b****ing was nowhere near this distant. It was something like a 6 run lead with 3 innings to go. THOSE kinds of leads are lost all the time. 95% of the time, it wouldn't matter. However, how bad would it be if the Astros didn't try to score an extra run in our game and that resulted in the Astros missing the playoffs by one game? There's absolutely no reason to take that kind of a chance. If Lopez didn't want the Padres scoring any more, he should have stopped trying to score himself.
Yes, but it also has happened two times in the past two weeks. Games are much higher scoring now than they used to be, with the addition of more hitter-friendly parks and much stronger and better all-around hitters. In my opinion, it should be a little more clear now that no game is ever out of reach in the 7th inning. For Lopes' ballclub to have tied the ballgame, they would have had to average two runs per inning for three innings, not an impossible task by any means. Pittsburgh, a horrible team at (.391), scored seven runs in one inning against some of the best relief ptichers in baseball.... WITH TWO OUTS! Well, last night, the Indians averaged four runs per inning in 7th-9th innings to tie and eventually win in the 11th. Personally, I think now managers should focus more energy on trying to score runs than to waste it all whining about the other team. Sure, throw at the other team if you want, but you're not going to earn much respect for it anymore.
All I can say is,... as a long-time Oilers fan, Seattle now knows how I and many others felt on that cold fall day in Buffalo not so long ago. Actually, now Seattle knows how we felt every year the Oilers were in the playoffs! I'm depressed now. (Bad memories of promising seasons past, suppressed memories)
Seattle's too good a team to not bounce back. It would be devastating to a young team like the Phillies or the Twins, but to the Mariners it's shocking, but not demoralizing. They proved that by winning today.
