Frankly, I don't know myself. As in Chinese, we call this portal site "Xin Lang". It sounds like Sin Long in English.

The name sina is from the Roman term for China sinae (sp?), meaning "The Land of the Qin" referring to the first Chinese empire 2200 years ago...

Ironically, the Chinese during the Han Dynasty at around 1st century AD, when the first Sino-Roman contacts were made, referred the Roman Empire as Dai Qin, meaning "Great Qin"... Both sides referred to each other as Qin...

However, with the Chinese humiliated by the Japanese from 1895-1945, the word sina was considered to be an offensive term amongst the Chinese folk as it was on equal terms with the famous phrase "Sick Man of East Asia" and was frequently used by the Japanese when they referred China as sina or cina

Now with the popularity of sina.com, the taboo is apparently being lifted...

So, they're not offended by "sina", but they are offended by "Chinaman". Weird.
