Sorry to start a new thread but I have to get your attention.

Please stop translating stories from Chinese media. Haven't you seen your work have created a two faced Yao who is humble and humorous to the U.S. media but cocky and big mouth to the Chinese media?! This is all your fault because in truth Yao has been about identical to both sides. If you applied for the Yao translator's job before and never got it, now you know why they gave it to Colin Pine.

Translating between languages is not just about matching word for word and making no grammar and spelling mistakes, which some of you couldn't even do, it is also about bridging the culture gaps. For example, Yao did not show any cockiness in his latest interview. He was just happy that he did well against the best defender and was concerned with his team's poor performance. But when his words came out of your hands, it sounded cocky, in American culture. Do you know why? Because his humorous demeanor in a subtle Chinese way was mis-translated by you folks. So, please stop doing it. If you really want to let his thinking be known, just do a summery type of thing. Please do not translate it word for word because most of us are just not up to that kind of job.

I agree with you in the main but it is important that we know Yao Mings thinking! Only in this way can the Rockets realy know where they stand and what Yao Ming needs to play upto his potential. He must not talk frankly to Rudy T , but I hope he does before the season ends. He can effect many changes needed in the Rockets Roster.

    I agree.

Maybe there should be a contest on the best translator.

The fans deserve to know the truth. Whether Yao Ming is a cocky or humble person, he is who he is. I rather know the real him than what the media transpires him to be.

first of all, I must agree we don¡¦t know credibility of every report about YM, either in chinese or English, and some translations make the situation worse because of culture gap. However, I believe most of fans here wants to know more about YM, especially his real thinking of the game, teammates and his life in America. So, I strongly agree oldgunrules¡¦s proposal, ¡§just do a summery type of thing¡¨.
A close look at YM by his weekly Chinese interview by Andy Yao can be found at rockets website: http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/bighour021221.html, which is a casual talk between the two and aired from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturdays on Houston¡¦s KCHN 1050 AM.
Here¡¦s a rough summery of his latest interview on mar 1st 2003.

    About the rockets team:
We can not keep consistent play in the game (against 3 eastern teams on the road). Fans enjoy watching it, while players are struggling.
    Op¡¦s defense on YM:
Wizards, traditional center against center; Knicks: keep you out of paint; Celtics: keep you out of touch.
    Referee:
You can only control yourself but not referee. Referee already treated me good as a rookie. Although we get unfair treatment in one or two games in crunch time (like vs wizards), don¡¦t forget we get 82 games in a season.
    Maurice Taylor:
A peferct combination of powerful up body and fine skills
Possibility to have dream as personal coach:
Of course good, but dream also needs rest after some many years playing in NBA.
    Help from teammates:
He especially appreciate hand by hand help from Kevin Cato.
Success comparing with Wang zhizhi and Bateer
He got lucky to be in the team like rockets because he is learning to play with rox, but rox are also learning how to play with him.

Of course YM also showed his humor at the beginning of interview when he told andy the story about some American young guys threw tea into the harbour from a English tea boat parked in boston, which surprised me that andy doesn¡¦t know the history event.

What part of the cultural difference makes it ok to talk about potential trades (naming specific players) to the media? Just wondering...

Alot of people that are translating this stuff, aren't even Chinese. They just use Alta Vista's Babblefish translation engine. Hence, the pathetic translation. :)

    This is ridiculous.

The truth will come out eventually. I for one, appreciate the translations.

Keep it up...a free copy of my next game to those who translate.

    :)

We need cocky players. It only shows that eventually Yao will be THE MAN !!!

    Hurry Up Yao !!!

I bothered to translate his interviews because it has lots of "insider" info about Yao, where you cannot read from American media. Lot of people in this board want to know what Yao really said, straight up. If I applied a Collin Pine's humbleness filter, the translation may make you feel Yao is a more humble person.

IMO, it's only natural for Yao to speak in different tunes when giving interviews his friend Yang Yi than when facing American media. In America, he is like a guest. It's only natural for him to be humble and giving respects to the host country and his fellow players. But in China, he is representing 1.3 billion Chinese people. It is a national pride thing. Understandably, Chinese fans will be more ready to accept his straight up/slightly cocky tunes than the American media will. In fact, if you follow other Chinese star professional athletes, you will realize that they gave similar style of interviews to Chinese media. This link (http://sports.sohu.com/71/44/subject204184471.shtml) tracks Chinese soccer players in Europe. You can find many articles that players gave straight up opinions, instead of a filtered out and humble version of it.

    Lancet,

    You are right on.

However, we WANT Yao to be slightly cocky and arrogant. It shows his passion for the game, and his irritation to his teamates.

Every single superstar player has that cockiness about him...Shaq, Kobe, Hakeem, MJ, Magic..etc..etc...

They all speak their minds.....good to see Yao is doing it too.

Can't wait for him to be comfortable enough to tell his teamates to quit slacking and suck it up and play together.

    Idiotic.

If you don't want to read the translations, don't. If you think the translations on here are of an inferior quality (and I disagree strongly), then find your own translator.

For the rest of us who enjoy discussing Yao Ming and the Rockets, we'll keep doing what we do.

I think translating is a good thing for all Yao fans. But for the reader, they can't trust 100% about the articals, though the last interview of YangYi is pretty excellent in writing. I think the author add a little more water into it.

Andy Yao's interview is so poor. He can't ask the real question. But anyway, hearing yao's real voice feel good.

I think the American media is more true about Yao because usually several reporters listen and then publish the interview. So it is hardly to fake.

Take it easy. Yao will stay in NBA for at least another 10 years. And in a year or so he will face the media without Pine at his side. Everybody will find out the true Yao eventually. I like Yao better when he jokes around with his friend and speak out his own opinion about the team and the problem with the team. He is extremely funny in his interview with Yang Yi. But when he faces the media, his humor is discounted to 20%. He sounded more confident and sincere when he talk to his friend. The part I like most in the interview is what he learned from an opponent and how he should play him the next time. Those are the things he would never told the media.
