Didn't see this posted...The Associated Press Published: November 3, 2006

BEIJING: Chinese forward Yi Jianlian, touted by many as the next Yao Ming, has received permission from his club to enter the 2007 NBA draft, state media said Friday.

Yi, who lead the Guangdong Tigers to three straight national championships, was given the backing of his club to enter the draft, the China Daily reported.

The 2.1-meter (6-foot-11) Yi has attracted attention in basketball circles for several years and the 19-year-old had been promoted as a 2006 daft prospect, but his club said he was too young and inexperienced.

"But now he is different, he is getting stronger mentally and physically. I think next year will be a big chance for him, so for us, it's time to let him go," Guangdong general manager Chen Haitao was quoted as saying.

"This is a great opportunity and also a test for me," said Yi, whose height and on-court moves have brought comparisons to 2.26-meter (7-foot-5) Houston Rockets center Yao.

Yi, who averaged 20.5 points and 9.6 rebounds last season, still needs the approval of the Chinese Basketball Association and an exemption from a CBA rule that Chinese players are not eligible for the NBA draft until they turn 22.

"We always support our players in joining high-quality overseas leagues," CBA vice president Hu Jiashi said, but added it was important for Yi to get a lot of playing time.

"If he is going to be stuck on the bench, it would be better if he stayed at home," Hu said.

Yi says the prospect of playing in the NBA is not as exciting as people expect.

"It is too early to predict my future in the NBA, because I am still improving all the time," he said.

For now, Yi says his focus is on contesting another national championship and winning gold at next month's Asian Games at Doha, Qatar.

In the absence of Yao, Yi will lead the team along with former NBA player Wang Zhizhi.

China was runner up to South Korea at the last Asian Games, the first time in 20 years China failed to win the men's gold at the regional tournament.

Wang, the first Chinese to play in the NBA, ended a four-year U.S. stay earlier this year and now plays for the People's Liberation Army team in Beijing.

Well they were going to give him permission sooner or later, but I don't think the NBA teams will be too high on him, Yao averaged 32 points and over 10 boards and won MVP in his last season in China, Yi won the championship as part of the team. I think the best place for him is Europe or the D-League. Trim him up a bit. Also, this should be in the NBA or the NBA Draft forum.

Achievement wise, the kid is even doing better than Yao Ming. (Of course, Yao Ming almost shouldered his Shanghai Sharks to championship, and Yi is just a part of a strong Guangdong Hongyuan Tigers with 4 ~ 5 national players)

He won the Best Rookie in his first season; yeah he was the 6th man behind a bunch of national players in the first 2 championships of his team. But he was already the starting 4 or 5 last year on the championship team, and was MVP of the CBA Final.

This season, he is currently in the top 3 of every of the stats categories.....25.6 ppg/12.4 rpg/2.45 bpg and #3 in efficiency......

He is currently ranked 14th in the 2007 draft....and predicted to be picked by Detroit Pistons.

Whoa, he's top three in assists too?! That's impossible.

If he does get drafted by the Pistons (which I doubt) he's going to have to contest with Rasheed for hte power foward spot, since I don't know whether or not Yi plays center. Better if he gets drafted by some other team (Celtics? Seattle? Rockets? Golden State?) that needs the PF spot.

Yao averaged 32.4 ppg (73% shooting percentage!!), 19 RPG, 4.8 block per game, in CBA 2001-2002 season before he came to NBA。

In the playoff that year, Yao averaged 41.3 ppg, 21 rpg, and 4.3 block.

In the final game of that playoff, Yao get 44 point (21-21!!!!!!!), 21 rebound, 7 block and help Shark got its first championship!!

Pryuen, you know how much I love your work and efforts all over the net and everything. I really do! However, to say something like that based on just Yi is coming from Canton is just silly.

    Yao did WHAT?!

Averaging 4.3 blocks in the playoffs?! WTF I never knew Yao was this good! Sure, I knew he averaged 32 points but 19 rebounds and 4.8 blocks? Man, us chinese basketball players are crap! :)p)

To me, now, Yao's potential seems limitless. Go get 'em Yao Ming!

That's good. It means he will have been through one whole NBA season before the Olympics in 2008. That's got to make Yao happy.

Just going through a training camp, pratices, physical conditioning and technical coaching in the NBA will help him dramatically. Any playing time he gets is an added bonus. If this guy has a decent rookie campaign, then Yao will be much closer to his goal of doing well at the Olympics.

Look at the training Yao was given throughout his CBA career and the condition he arrived in. Despite that, Yi starts with much better conditioning than Yao started with, and looks like he has a solid frame, terriffic quickness for a big man, a knack for blocking shots, and a decent scoring touch.

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind drafting him. We need a PF. IMO he will progress faster on our team than any other team. JVG has already been through the experience of grooming someone from the CBA, so he'll be quick to pick out bad habits. Yao will no doubt Yi with the language barrier and give him tips on things he learned over his first 4 or 5 seasons.

It would be a sweet deal. It would also help China for the Olympics.

The jury's still out on Yi -- but he's coming along nicely. We'll see on draft day.

He's not the next Yao. He's not big enough nor strong enough to be like Yao. I remember in the WBC he got bullied around by big centers like Santiago and Howard.

However, his handles and perimeter game are better than Yao's, and he can jump higher. I think he has a chance to be decent in the NBA, but it won't be easy for him.

Of course I know ALL about Yao Ming when he was in CBA, and how good he was, personal stats wise, and how dominating he was in CBA.

My response was to rebuke brantonli24's remark that the reason why Yi got 3 rings was only due to the rest of the national players of the Guangdong Hongyuan Tigers. IMHO, achievement wise, Yi is doing better, as at least he got 3 CBA championship rings at the age of 19, and he is getting better and better.......
