I guess it just goes to show you, that China can execute 1700+ people in a year and still get the Olympics! [IMG]

So if Chinese competitors don't win medals, do you think they will get executed? [IMG]

I can't believe that the Olympic Committee even pretends to care about human rights, etc. This is a joke. I think that China is unfairly demonized by some... but to allow them a symbol of international acceptance and prestige is absurd. In the past two decades China has slaughtered more than 1 million Tibetans, tortured thousands of political prisoners, shot protestors, resisted free elections, threatened a military invasion of territory not recognized as theirs, and countless other incidents. (the spratley islands) and now they get the olympics.

    Ugh.

Whatever slim chance Houston or any other US city had of getting the 2012 Olympics just increased.

Other than the human rights violations, China had the best bid. The largest country in the world had never hosted the Olympics. The Olympic Committee believes that the close scrutiny brought about by the Olympics will keep China from committing further atrocities. I don't agree with the IOC on this point.

    I'm very disappointed in this . . .

I wonder how much money China paid to Juan Antonio Samaranch (or however you spell his name).

So, I guess we've got a pretty good shot here in Texas then. [IMG]

Seriously though, I would prefer it if the US boycotted these games and I hope other countries do as well. The level of oppression in the Chinese government is beyond horrific.

Of all people, Jim Rome had a great take on this. He said very sarcastically, "Nevermind that people are being murdered in the streets. What's really important is RUNNING AROUND A TRACK!"

If the IOC can hold the Olympics in Nazi Germany of 1936, then they can hold them anywhere. The IOC does not care about human rights. The 2012 Games will probably go to Sierra Leone.

I remember when Enron was opening up and the police were around harrassing and hiding the homeless. Can you imagine what will be going on in China to "clean up" for the games? Oh goodness...

Errr.... you were saying that the number of executions per capita were not that big of a difference. I was pointing out that US numbers are accurate while Chinese figures are considered to be much higher than 1,700. I would say being the biggest violator of human rights should qualify as a pretty good reason to deny a country the priveledge of hosting the Olympics. I'm sure abuses we don't know about will be uncovered soon by the great investigative reporting of the government run Chinese media.

Shanna: So the genocide that China was engaging in during the mid-90's is completely irrelevant in the advanced year of 2001? Sorry, countries shouldn't be given the Olympics less than a decade after the mass executions/rape/cultural ruination/temple burnings that China inflicted upon Tibet.

Or are you just disputing the execution # [IMG]? I'll agree with you that they're not so severe there... but the other crimes make that irrelevant. Oh... and emm... torturing the person before executing them isn't good either.

BTW, at least in the late 90's there was pretty good evidence that QUITE a few people were dying in Chinese prisons that went unreported.

I was actually commenting on the # of crimes rather than the other crimes. The torture and stuff, of course, is a separate issue. My only point was that just because they executed 1700 people isn't a big deal in itself.

BTW, at least in the late 90's there was pretty good evidence that QUITE a few people were dying in Chinese prisons that went unreported.

Then again, there's quite a bit of evidence of rape and sodomy and such in our prisons as well. [IMG]

Come on, Russia hosted the games too.

The olympics should not be about governments, it is about sport..and sport alone.

If China had the best bid, then so be it.

How many people did the US execute last year?

Nevermind, I found it. We executed 85 people last year. Given that China's population in nearly 10 times ours, that would put as on a per-capita basis of about half of that of China. If we had the same population as China, we'd be on pace for about 850 executions last year. That's NOT that big a difference, unless you think the US executes the exact right number of people each year.

Granted, maybe the crimes are different and such -- but the # of executions really is not a major issue, if you believe in the death penalty.

Well US executions are reported and completely accurate. The number of Chinese executions is not officially reported so the actual figure is considered by human rights organizations to be much higher than 1,700.

So now the issue isn't with the # of executions, but the possibility that there's stuff we don't know about. Let's just assume the worst and deny China the Olympics. Good call.

I don“t think the US government is all too high on human rights either...

how can you support capital punishment and fight for human rights at the same time?
