Chicago Tribune thinks Stu Jackson was reason for no Francis

    Last season's co-rookies of the year, Elton Brand and Steve Francis, were left off the 2002 Goodwill Games team that includes NBA youngsters Baron Davis, Kenyon Martin, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Mike Miller, Jermaine O'Neal, Wally Szczerbiak, Rashard Lewis, Jason Terry, Marc Jackson and Mark Madsen. The only non-NBA member of the team is Duke's Shane Battier.

    The selection committee was chaired by former Grizzlies general manager Stu Jackson, who may be upset with Francis for forcing him to trade his draft rights. But whom did Brand ever anger?

    I guess they didn't select Brand also because he was co-ROY with Francis. So to select him and not Francis would have made people wonder why...

    they picked Marky Madsen because he's the supposed "bodyguard" of Shaq, as professed.

    of course, Steve is no bodyguard because he's more focused on playing all-star caliber ball.

    oh yeah, and Marky has so many smooth moves too. so quick and so good.

    Mark Madsen really made the team. I didn't even notice his selection. Could someone explain why the HELL the picked Mark Madsen. Not that I'm made Stevie didn't make it, because I don't want Stevie hitting the wall during the playoffs next year due to exhaustion.

    The real reason Francis was left off, courtesy of Ken Bikoff of Basketball News (in an ESPN chat):

    "If I'm not mistaken, players have to be 22 or younger to play in the Goodwill games, and Francis turned 23 in February."

    Mark Madsen is 25 and he's on the team.

    I think it's either you have to be 22 or under OR drafted in the last 2 seasons.
