I'm watching CNN and they are talking about racism in the ranks of the NYC firefighters. Of these guys says "nothing worse than a cheesehead." Excuse my ignorance, but this sounds like something my buddy Bruce from Chicago would say when referring to Packer fans. Am I missing something? Is this a new slur of some sort? Just so I dont accidentally offend someone when talking football, I'd like to know which group of people I should not talk football around.
LMAO. RM95's Girl was watching the same thing and just asked me the same thing! I've never heard it used as a racial slur.
Among a long list of slurs I found these: Cheese-Eater,Dutch,Represents their fondness of eating cheese; used mostly by Germans. Cheesehead,Whites,Wisconsin is the dairybelt; frequently used in a derogatory manner. Cheeser/Cheesehead,Canadians,Used primarily in northern Washington State. Refers to Canadians who cross the border to shop for big blocks of inexpensive American Cheese. Everything else I found refers to Packer fans or Wisconsonians (is that right?) in general. But some guy on a Wisconsin travel site (go figure) states: Cheesehead - an ethnic slur, pure and simple, and a name that ought never be spoken or written. We're badgers, dammit, not that other name. I'm as confused as you are.
No, they had this serious discussion of firefighters using racial slurs on their radios, and then they showed an example. They had a burning building on the screen and a voiceover had a fireman say something like... "Nothing worse than a cheesehead" and then the CNN people all looked offended and shocked about it. So weird. I felt like I had stepped into Bizzarro World.
I just saw the report, and this is how it look on the tv screen. "Nothing worse than a cheesehead (Deleted). So it wasn't cheesehead that was the slur, it was the word after.
why would they quote something to prove a point but block out the word that they are using for that point?????? good research mulder - i've only heard cheesehead as a term for canadians - because i used to live right near the B.C./Washington border.
OK now this makes sense: The firefighter allegedly made the remarks while inside a fire truck and on his way back to the station after a call on Monday afternoon. Officials said the firefighter who made the racial slur was driving the truck and talking to a supervisor, who is not heard on the tape. He reportedly did not know that a microphone was in the "on" position when he was recorded saying the "N" word four times. Part of the conversation is unintelligible, officials said, but he was reportedly commenting on how an African-American was driving a car with Wisconsin plates . Officials played the tape at a newsconference: "Nothing worse than a cheesehead n***er."
Look, the use of the N word isn't anything to laugh at, but damn, the use of calling someone a CHEESEHEAD in addition to a ni**er is made me laugh out loud. What, are the black people from Wisconsin worse than all of the other black people to a racist or something?
I saw the report, and I believe it was Chicago firefighters making the comments, not NYC firefighters.
