This morning I put air in all 4 of my tires because they are a little low. I didn't check the pressures afterwards because I didn't have much time and I knew at the pressure they were I didn't leave the air on long enough to put too much air in. After doing this my check engine light comes on.

If my tires are dangerously over/under inflated, will this effect my check engine light at all? (my LOW TIRE PRESSURE light was on before I put air in the tires)

What make & model? My wife's VW is like that with very little deviation in tire pressure.

    2010 Nissan Rogue....

a couple yrs ago I had the check engine light so I drove 45 miles to my Nissan dealership. Took the entire day off for this. And come to find out, the reason for it was I didn't tighten the gas cap ENOUGH last time I got gas :mad::mad:

But, its better then a failing engine.

Your check engine light shouldn't be related to your tires. Tires have a "TPMS" with its own indicator light that looks like a tire with low air pressure.

Take your car to an auto parts store and they can hook up an OBD code scanner and tell you what the check engine light is for.

No idea why putting air in your tires would put up the check engine light. Take is to Autozone and they'll plug it into their OBD monitor and it gives them a code to let you know what's causing it. It's free.

Yeah, just take it to Autozone or O'Reilly's and have them do an OBD scan and it should give you a general but more direct answer to the check engine light.

I would say just take it to Autozone and have them do an OBD scan.

He should take it to Autozone after checking his gas cap. :) Also, is it still true that sometimes you need a certain amount of cold starts (3?) before the light will go off if it is something like the gas cap?

Check engine light has nothing to do with tire pressure. Usually check engine light comes on for some kind of error on emissions. I would suggest taking it to AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts they read the code for free..

Personally, I would get an OBD scan done at Autozone. It's fast and free!

Well sadly, I got the gas cap CHECK ENGINE light again last year. To make sure that was it, I first tightened the gas cap, then took off the positive battery cable for 10 minutes. Hooked it back on. Light never came back on til now.

You can clear the code with an OBD scanner to get rid of the light.

Don't know if it's been mentioned but try taking it to Autozone for a diagnostics check. It's free.

In all seriousness, my check engine light has been on for a few months now. I took it to a mechanic and they charged me about $500 to fix some kind of sensor (seems like that's always what they say) and less than a week later.....it came back on. I don't want to take it back to them because they'll just say it's something different and charge me again to fix this "new" problem....and then it will come back on a few days later. Rinse, lather, repeat.

I'm just going to drive with it on until it's time for my inspection. I don't want my car to turn into a guinea pig for these guys to try and fix over and over again until they actually get it right.

    Was it an O2 sensor?
