Anyone know of ways to get good combo deals for a weekend trip to Vegas (airfare and hotel). Some of my college buddies and I are wanting to take a trip out in May (after my GMAT). We'd like to stay on the strip, or as close to it as possible. Any thoughts/suggestions on places to look for deals and places to stay/visit?!?
FWIW, we're all of age and aren't opposed to having a good time ;-)

Just an FYI, it will almost be 1/3 of the price to go during the week rather than a weekend in May.

Also, just to get an idea, go to vegas.com and enter a string of dates to see how the prices fluctuate from one weekend to the next and from weekend to weekday.

I will let you know that my brother in law just got back from staying at the Barbary Coast hotel. Its an old, little hotel that just happens to be in one of the best locations on the strip. He said the rooms were actually pretty darn decent and you are a sky bridge walk from Ceasar's and Bellagio, and right next door to Bally's/Paris.

I'd give them a look if you want to save money but be on the main part of the strip.

MGM is a good place to stay for rookies. They will upgrade you for $10 if you ask them when you arrive at check in. The upgrade from one tower to the other is worth 10$ in my opinion.

Also, you get a free pass to Studio 54 for staying there. That saves you 20$ per person almost every night.

You also get cheap passes for the buffet in your hotel coupon book. Worth it.

MGM is relatively central to the strip. Has a nice sports book, and lots of gambling options.

Whataburger is a good cheap meal at 2am.

Each club is hot on a different night. So figure out the schedule by asking a bouncer. I think Studio 54 is Tuesday. I liked Rain, 54, and Ra. THe club at the palms has the hottest women without question. No contest.

"O" is worth seeing, the bellagio dancing fountains are cool. Cheetah has tons of stippers.

Sports Gambling is a lof of fun and if you bet guys like Randy Johnson you have a fair shot at winning. Roulette steals your money. And you can win at black jack. Poker is a gamble.

I just got this from Expedia.com, you might want to check there.

Las Vegas is having a birthday ...
And you get the present: Hotels from $19

Vegas turns 100 this year ... and while that may sound old, this is one city that'll always love to party, have fun, and stay up all night! Experience the thrills of Vegas for less this spring: Get a hotel room from $19 or a flight + hotel trip from $223. Book your trip now and get ready to celebrate with the youngest, hippest 100-year-old we know!

Thanks Faos... I'll look into that one. I'm really excited about this trip, especially after working through the GMAT stuff and taking my GMAT that Friday we're leaving.

Too bad Southwest doesn't fly to Vegas from Dallas. I guess it'd be too easy if that were the case :-(

    Dumb question...
Is that upgrade at MGM $10 a night or just $10?

It is just 10$. Tip the service guy at check in and the upgrade is usually free. The more expensive tower is clean and has a more comfortable feel. It is not amazing, but is much better than the other tower at the end of a long gambling day.

If you are already in the nice tower to begin then you can upgrade to a suite/spa for free. Of course you would probably want to top $20 for that.

By the way, the tip to upgrade is standard procedure and all the employees know what you are talking about.

After reading this thread I googled the practice of tipping for an upgrade.

Things I read about on SEVERAL websites:

    1. The tip is usually $20...and the nicer the hotel, the more it is.

    2. You just hold the bill in your hand when you ask if there is a chance of an upgrade. If they upgrade you, you slip the bill under your credit card when you hand it to them.

    3. This does not happen as much anymore since hotels now fire people for essentially accepting a bribe for an upgrade.

    4. The hotel's job is for you to enjoy your stay and want to come back, so you can usually just ask for an upgrade and if they have an extra supply of rooms, they usually have no problem giving them to you anyways...this is the HOTEL's policy at most Vegas hotels. The hotel does not mind upgrading you if they have extra rooms to do it...it retains guests. After this has happened you can then tip the dude if you want...but if money is offered first, they have a chance of getting fired now.

    5. Know what an upgraded room is called...ask specifically. Say I booked the "delux room" but I was wondering if you have any empty "Bellagio suites" that might be available to be upgraded to.
They will then either tell you, yes, no, or yes for more money. It helps if you have stayed and gambled at the hotel before AND if you are polite.

Remember this about ALL Vegas hotels and casinos: It NEVER hurts to ask. If you've gambled at a table a while, ask if they might let you go eat at the cafe...if you want an upgrade, ask, if you want show tickets and you've gambled...ask. They may say no, but they might say yes, especially if you are polite, have stayed there before, will stay there again, or if its a slow weekday anyways.
