Here's the deal. I've been meaning to visit one of my good buddies from college in Denver. I'm also a die hard Cleveland Cavs/Browns fan, and to a lesser extent an Indians fan (frankly, I find baseball boring). So it looks like there's a good chance the Indians will be visiting Denver next weekend so I'd like to do the same. Nothing is set in stone, I'm not guaranteed tickets (they go on sale next Monda), and of course the Indians aren't officially in the World Series.

But I figure I better take my chances now and book a flight before I have to pay even more in the next few days (is this true?). Any tips? I was shocked to see Frontier (which has it's hub in Denver) to be more expensive than any searches through typical travel sites. One major question: I'm looking at Hotwire's limited rate, which gives the cheapest rate I've found yet, but you don't get to know the actual itinerary until AFTER you book the flight. So while the price is very tempting, I'm worried I'll have a 6 hr layover in Jersey. Does anyone have any experiences w/ taking these 'deals'. I'm flying from Florida by the way. Any other sites that offer this same type of deal? Does anyone have any other ideas or tips? TIA.

Bump for any more tips. Otherwise I think I might take my chances w/ the Hotwire deal late tonight. Come on Tribe!

Last minute flights are never cheap. You might have better luck with stand by.

The site I use is always right on the money. www.SideStep.com Finds all the lowest prices from all the airlines, even including the other search engines deals.

Also good for HOTELS... I just booked last night a 4 night stay at a Best Western (not the best place to stay, but cheap as hell) on the Virginia beach shoreline with the beach right on the back porch. $23.70 a night. With taxes, just over $100.

Thanks for the tips people. As it turns out, I decided to try out the Hotwire Limited Rate deal. Basically you pick the dates, but not the times. You don't find out the times until after you pay, so that's the gamble to save a few bucks. They will tell you if the flight involves a red eye or more than 1 layover though.

So here's my tip, if it wasn't obvious to anyone else: I picked out the dates and specific airports from Hotwire and they show me the discount price. On average this price was about 10% lower than any other price I could find. Then I check out the same itinerary on other travel sites, like Orbitz or the other recommendations in this thread. I'm assuming that they will list similar flights that I would possibly get booked on. In my case I was right. That way you at least have a ballpark idea of what you're getting into when you roll the dice w/ Hotwire. Of course, if you're flying from Atlanta to NY or some other huge airports this might not help. In my case I used Daytona International (which I didn't even know existed before today) to Denver, so there wasn't much variation. And I was happy with the times they had, so I figure I got exactly the same flight I wanted 10% cheaper than any other place I checked out on the net.
