headed down to galveston for a buddy's bachelor party. we're thinking of stopping and grabbing a bite to eat before we head down to the beach house at pointe west. any recommendations for some good cheap eats for a friday afternoon? maybe burgers and a beer? it's been 16 years since i've been to galveston to spend any time outside of getting on a cruise ship, so i have no idea.

    thanks.

The Spot until 7PM has a great happy hour during the week- Make sure to order off of the appetizer menu AT the bar and all of the appetizers are half price. And you can sit outside on the Seawall. One of my favorite places in Galveston.

I say The Spot as well. The Shrimp Po Boys is cheap and good.

Personally speaking, I just watched all of Robb Walsh's favorite things to eat of all thing Houston, and his #1 was Oysters Gilhooleys in San Leon.

I, and a few friends are making a special trip to try these out. It isn't expensive, and considering it might be 20-30 minutes difference to try them out, I'd do it. (we're all going easy 50-70 min out to try these.)

Here's the review. And remember two things: The Oysters near Houston are still fine and it may be a few years before we get to enjoy these again for what they are in their briny shiny form.

(I've enjoyed and agreed with Robb's postings for the past decade. So I may be biased.)

The city isn't what it used to be. It all happened so fast. Everything went to crap. It's like... everyone's sense of food just... disappeared. Rachel Ray made things worse. The jobs started drying up. Then the stores had to shut down. Then another man was elected President. He was supposed to change things. He didn't. As more and more people turned to McNuggets and donuts the town became gripped in fear. Dark times. The city needs protection. There is a man that lives by night, searches the trashcans and cleans out the garbage. To clean out the trashcan of society I've chosen to become more than a man. I'm the hero this town needs. I am... The Fatty. Here to save all people from eating crap, and teaching people that when you want to gorge, Fatty knows where to do it.

(Someone make a pic of me with a mask, please.)

EDIT, and I DON'T want to be mosquito!

I assure you, the bbs appreciates the fatty.

Next time you're in Austin give this place a shot it's quickly becoming one of my favorites.

I would recommend the Cajun Greek at 2226 61st St. Its is pretty good has gyros and seafood. Real good food and quick with a few brews. Its mainly locals that eat there which is a good thing. Also is on the way to the west end. Prices are what I would consider reasonable for a lunch place.

Michael Burger for burgers. Try the Galvez burger, I think it's called.

I think Michael Burger is one of only two or three restaurants i've ever been to in galveston. No lie, it is friggin amazing. Their spicy fries are awesome. Think shape of BW3's chips, but taste of spicy curly fries. yum. I always got the Jamaica (I think) burger...comes with grilled pineapple and jalepenos, so good!

Don't know where your house is, but if it's on the West End, go to the Blue Water Grill.

Place is always empty and kind of a dump, but don't let that fool you. Best burger in Houston/Galveston IMO.

The Spot is another good one. Can't go wrong with a shrimp po-boy and a bunch of brews out on the deck. Just watch out for all the Hell's Angels next door.

The spot is great but it's always so damn packed with all the motorcycle people and the parking sucks. I still prefer Fish Tails across from the Flagship. Not exactly "cheap" anymore, but gawd the blackened Redfish is amazing!

If the Spot is too packed, there's always Yagas on the Strand.

MichaelBurger is good, but it's far from cheap as far as burger joints go.

Fishtails is seafood, and a tourist trap in terms of pricing.

For the next day hangover, hit up La Estacion on 25th street. Awesome hole-in-the wall mexican breakfast.

My friends took me here a few months back and it was a complete dive, but those are the best d*mn oysters I have ever had in my life. I would recommend this place to everyone. it is amazing how such a hole in the wall could produce such amazing food.
