im planning on moving out of my parents house this summer and i think i might be needing some furnature. you guys know any places with cool old furnature? (thats cheap, im poor)
Where do you live? Cool, old furniture of any vintage is usually kinda expensive. If it has any kitsch value at all these days, then it ends up in antique shops that specialize in that and they gouge you for it. One option is to hit garage sales. It may take some looking, but you can find a diamond in the rough out there. For cool, new furniture try Ikea or Eurway. Just for fun, go look at Cantoni on Westheimer just west of Gessner.
If your really poor hit some garage-sales. I found a barley used riding lawnmower for 150 bucks,a few weekends ago.
Aunts and Uncles are sometimes a good source. Cousins that just graduated college also provide cheap furniture. Renting is another option. 4 cider blocks and a door makes a fine redneck table. Going to college?
yeah, i live on the NW side of houston. i completely forgot about garage sales... super idea dude. AND yes i am going to start college... arent you guys excited for me?
There used to be a cool furniture re-sale shop on Alabama. I got half the furniture I have now there. I heard they closed down, though. Blue Bird resells old furniture, but it's a little pricier from what I remember. The garage sale / church sale / classified route works, too, but it takes awhile to sift through the crap to find decent stuff.
Go to garage sales. They rock. I got my glass-topped table for $20, and one of my couches for $7. (The other I got for $10 from some college students.) I think my computer chair was $3 and my TV table was only a few dollars as well. None of these had any obvious defects or holes in them. They were never fancy, but they have served me well. These garage sales were in Houston, around Bellaire.
Diseased Monkey, I might be able to help you. My uncle just moved away and I have a cedar wood desk and chest with 4 drawers that I would sell pretty cheap. Write back if you're interested. I live in NW Houston...champions Forest drive, so you're probably close too.
Pasadena has the BEST thrift stores in the Houston area...the Eastend also has some good ones. If you wanna a map or something, email me. good luck
Was it called Alabama Furniture? Cause if it is, it moved! It's on Yale at 22nd. They have all kinds of used furniture. I would also try IKEA. Talk about cheap. It's so cheap, you have to put it together! yup... go garage sale-ing, early on Saturday mornings, best time. good luck DM, maybe if you wear your afro, people will have pity and give stuff to you!?!?!
If you can wait long enough, I'd wait until the end of the school year at UH, Rice, and other colleges about. Check the bulletin boards around campus (library, dorms, etc) for people unloading stuff. You can often find people who are graduating and moving away or otherwise changing their living situation and need to unload some stuff. This worked only marginally well for me at U of Chicago because the students there had a tendency to think their things actually gained in value with their possession of them. But, that can't be a universal college tendency, could it?
